Max is back! New husband, new job, and a training regime that cannot fail - to go wrong! Take one interim Chief Training Officer, add five recruits, mix with Joan of Arc, a baby mammoth, a duplicitous Father of History, a bombed rat, Stone Age hunters, a couple of passing policemen who should have better things to do, and Dick the Turd. I am addicted !
Revisado: 10-22-18
Even after 6 of these books and several of the novelettes I find them totally enjoyable.
Repetitive, yes, predictable yes, sometimes inconsistent, yes. But irresistible and impossible to put down. I love all the characters who feel more like family by now. And I cannot praise Zara Ramm enough for her perfect reading of the series. I hope Jodi Taylor will never grow up but continue to write these wonderful, crazy stories, I will not say about 'time travel' for fear of annoying Dr. Barstow. The history lessons are an added bonus !

Historia
Edward St. Aubyn has penned one of the most acclaimed series of the decade with the Patrick Melrose Novels. Now you can listen to all five novels in one volume: Never Mind, Bad News, Mother's Milk, Some Hope, and At Last. By turns harrowing and hilarious, this ambitious novel cycle dissects the English upper class. Edward St. Aubyn offers his listener the often darkly funny and self-loathing world of privilege as we follow Patrick Melrose's story of abuse, addiction, and recovery from the age of five into early middle age.

Brilliant but tragic satire of upper class life
Revisado: 03-08-18
Would you consider the audio edition of The Complete Patrick Melrose Novels to be better than the print version?
I would choose the audio every time if read by this wonderful reader.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved the wry humour and spot on irony with which he deals with
his tragic story.
What does Alex Jennings bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Alex Jennings was Patrick Melrose to me, capturing the exact tone
and every nuance in this entertaining satirical look at the British upper classes.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
While each short novel could be listened to in one sitting, I needed a break between each to recover and digest the content.
Any additional comments?
We cannot forget the poignant fact that this is a fictional rendering of the author's life and this makes it all the more moving.

Historia
In prose vibrant and witty, The Queen of the Tambourine traces the emotional breakdown - and eventual restoration - of Eliza Peabody, a smart and wildly imaginative woman who has become unbearably isolated in her prosperous London neighborhood. Eliza must reach the depths of her downward spiral before she can once again find health and serenity. This story of a woman's confrontation with the realities of sanity will delight listeners who enjoy the works of Anita Brookner, Sybille Bedford, Muriel Spark, and Sylvia Plath. Winner of the Whitbread Prize for Best Novel of the Year.

Reader with a cloth ear for English accents!
Revisado: 06-05-17
Wonderfully fanciful story of a middle aged woman whose husband has left her, in the form of letters to a neighbor. She is a delightfully unreliable narrator who's character develops and expands throughout.
Sadly the reader was terrible. Her grasp of British regional and upper class accents so poor that it really spoiled the book for me.
Was it not possible to have an English reader with a feel for the voices and changes of accent so central to this novel?
