Star, a young survivor of the Sand Creek Massacre, is brought to the Fort Marion prison castle, where he is forced to learn English and practice Christianity by Richard Henry Pratt, an evangelical prison guard who will go on to found the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, an institution dedicated to the eradication of Native history, culture, and identity. A generation later, Star’s son, Charles, is sent to the school, where he is brutalized by the man who was once his father’s jailer. Under Pratt’s harsh treatment, Charles clings to moments he shares with a young fellow student, Opal Viola.

Beautiful
Revisado: 04-27-24
This book was like reading poetry to me. Sometimes I didn’t understand it but the words and thoughts stayed with me and wandered through me just like our stars.

She employs a technique she learned from her parents—also talented musicians—who fled China in the wake of the Cultural Revolution. But when an accident leaves her parents debilitated, she abandons her future for a job at a high-end beauty and wellness store in New York City.

Beautiful, cultural and so weird, just loved it
Revisado: 01-22-24
Highly recommend! Such a thoughtful, interesting and beautifully sad listen. The narrator was perfect. I felt taken away to another place but yet the future portrayed is so familiar it makes this novel even even more devastating.

Historia
Would you pay to watch babies fight to the death? Only the wealthy and privileged have the kind of money that can pay for such vile entertainment. The first rule of Baby Fights is there are no rules. Babies can't follow rules. But with a certain persuasion they turn into rabid little monsters, and oh what a spectacle it is to see.

Pretty much what you would expect from something about baby fights. Abuse and drugs and that’s the story. Glad it was short and almost stopped listening a few times but made it through.

Historia
Sheena Patel’s incandescent first novel begins with the unnamed narrator describing her involvement in a seemingly unequal romantic relationship. With a clear and unforgiving eye, she dissects the behavior of all involved, herself included, and makes startling connections between the power struggles at the heart of human relationships and those of the wider world. I’m a Fan offers a devastating critique of class, social media, patriarchy’s hold on us, and our cultural obsession with status and how that status is conveyed.

Historia
The Christmas season offers little cheer for Eileen Dunlop, an unassuming yet disturbed young woman trapped between her role as her alcoholic father's caretaker in a home whose squalor is the talk of the neighborhood and a day job as a secretary at the boys' prison, filled with its own quotidian horrors. Consumed by resentment and self-loathing, Eileen tempers her dreary days with perverse fantasies and dreams of escaping to the big city.

Weird and intense
Revisado: 12-06-23
Long way in and I almost gave up on it and then she just sort of grew on me so I stuck with it and it was quite the revealing story and then ended with quite a twist. I really like her blatant honesty and her snarkiness too so there’s that.

Historia
Matthew is a normal 11-year-old boy living with his parents and little sister in Surrey. He's too old and sensible to have an imaginary friend really. Yet when Matthew's parents keep finding him talking and arguing with a strange presence whom Matthew calls Chocky, that's what they believe it must be…at first. But Chocky is oddly sinister, and keeps asking Matthew all sorts of complicated questions about the world and making him behave in unusual and erratic ways. Then Matthew suddenly does something heroic, well beyond his capabilities; the media become interested and the interest in Matthew widens.

Thoughtful and short
Revisado: 11-28-23
I was pleasantly surprised by this! I felt her writing was (probably) nicely edited to explain simply how she felt about her early loves and losses of Justin and Kevin, the eventual conservatorship and how it affected all her relationships with her family and with anyone she was trying to have a relationship with, including herself.

Read or listen to Rosemary’s Baby instead or watch it on FX’s American Horror Story. Sadly there’s nothing new here despite the intriguing beginning.

Highly recommend, a powerful tale to listen to (the narration is perfect) and written with so much creativity and heart. A not so simple journey of a family of individuals thru the Jim Crow of the fifties in the Midwest w a splash of magic and sci-fi and much more.
