Great Worldbuilding
Revisado: 08-18-24
Great read. Engaging worldbuilding & action sequences. The rivers & magic are strange and beautiful. Peter is a great narrator, from the tidbits he reads about on plaques to his eye being drawn to boobs to walkkng us through his though process in experimenting with magic, he has a solid and inmersive pov perfect for the story.

Incredible detective story!
Revisado: 06-13-24
Gripping tale of the journey through history of an ancient manuscript, meticulously uncovered in all its detail for the first time by the author. It unfolds like a mystery novel - yet it's true. It's beautifully written and performed, and I couldn't stop listening. What a debt of gratitude we owe to the author for his persistence in getting to the truth. Particularly beautiful and fitting ending section.

Absolutely fantastic
Revisado: 12-15-23
An astonishing true story, beautifully written and performed. It's amazing to hear this tale from behind the scenes of the code wars in WWII by the person who was actually there creating the codes. The writing is a treat, with a unique authorial voice full of dry humor and wordplay. A really different book that reads like a novel but that also conveys vital, firsthand history of the time. I couldn't put it down. Huge kudos to the performer, too, who brought the text to life brilliantly.

Historia
The Ephrussis were a grand banking family, as rich and respected as the Rothschilds, who “burned like a comet” in 19th-century Paris and Vienna society. Yet by the end of World War II, almost the only thing remaining of their vast empire was a collection of 264 wood and ivory carvings, none of them larger than a matchbox. The renowned ceramicist Edmund de Waal became the fifth generation to inherit this small and exquisite collection of netsuke. Entranced by their beauty and mystery, he determined to trace the story of his family through the story of the collection.
