Excellent narration

This is the last book of Lockwood & Co I will be enjoying through Audible. This narrator, Katie Lyons, is fantastic. But when I went to purchase the third book in this series, the new narrator, something Bevan, reads all the characters like scooby-doo-type bafoons. She even reads the “whispering skull” with an obnoxious, nasally, loud-mouth cartoonish voice even when the description reads “whispering in a voice only Lucy could hear”. I promptly returned the book to get my credit back.

Back to this current book, Lyons does a supremely good job of creating an eerie feeling and is convincing for every character. Charming and talented.

The cats!

Oh my goodness he’s a hopeless crazy cat man. I just love everything about this book, but especially the underlying (in my opinion, main) storyline with the cats.

Not the best L’Amour

Took me by surprise!

I didn’t know what to expect when I started this book but it definitely surprised me with thrilling twists! It pulled me into a strange yet realistic world that fascinated me. I couldn’t stop listening and finished the book in two days. I won’t spoil anything by saying that I have NEVER before heard of any story or description that painted a horse as being monstrously terrifying. I LOVE being surprised by something new and this entire book was most definitely a new experience for me. I loved the writing, and the character development. And both the narrators did an excellent job! It’s hard to find a woman’s voice that is as pleasant to the ear as the low timber of a man’s voice can be, and she was superbly wonderful! The author impresses me with her many talents and skills. I was surprised to learn she composed and played the fun music that I had so enjoyed for this audio production. Wow!

Grinning ear to ear

These books are so hilariously entertaining. I enjoyed every bit of it. The characters are wonderful, and the situations they find themselves in had me cracking up. Phil Thron is also now one of my favorite narrators.

Captivating storytelling

This story kept me spellbound for its entirety. I read some reviews that expressed frustration with not knowing when a voice change happens and being confused, however I found that it added to the charm of this story. It is actually really fun that Novik doesn’t use a flashing neon sign for every character voice change, which allows the reader to more fully immerse her/himself into the story, plot, and characters. It was easy enough to do but made the reading adventure even more fun. This book seals it: I’m a HUGE Novik fan. I love her Temeraire series. And now this is right up there with my favorites. And from a parents’ review standpoint, I’m so pleased that there were no sex scenes that would make it inappropriate for my kids to read.

Great historical fiction

Set in the 1540’s, we follow a young cartographer in a story of the Spanish Conquistadors. In an obsessed search for gold in the new world, I feel the author was true to the wickedness that this greed spurred. An important part of history that sets the stage for the Latin American Revolution, and also shows how, where, and who was involved in the American cultural blending during the Renaissance. This book is a great supplemental read when learning about the early Renaissance. I also find the discussion of map-making (the science/math involved as well as the actual art of mixing colors and drawing the map) very interesting. There are several fun class activity ideas to be found here for sure.

Love the narrator and the characters

This is a great story. It’s not something I would choose as an historical fiction because I feel it takes too many liberties. But as a fictional story, it’s brilliant. I enjoyed the story so much and LOVED the characters.

Thought-provoking

Well-written and kept me interested the entire time. Written in the 50’s it’s dated, but one can look at that as a bit of historical value (sad though it may be). There are a couple sexual parts that would make it inappropriate reading for anyone under 15 or 16 years old (and then, uncomfortable). Overall, I like how thought-provoking the story is for survival, food storage, and the importance of books, among other things.
