Decent Info, Poor Narration, Even Worse Audio....

I'll start by saying I knew what I was getting into as it was listed as being read by the author. We all know how that goes. Sorry, but not everybody can be Neil Gaiman.

For a book to help anxiety and anger it sure does its best to get on your last nerve. It had some good info but you need to be ready for the following.

1. A chipper white woman sayin "Aieeght?" (alright), 2. More cussing than needed and this is coming from an Eddie Murphy "Raw" fan, 3. Audio quality akin to being recorded in a truck stop bathroom, 4. Conversations in the background. 5. A couple of times when someone started talking to her through the stall door and the poor job editing it out. 6. A train/truck going by in the back ground. And finally, two and halve hours in something starts tapping the mic intermittently.

I'm actually surprised she didn't start eating a ham sandwich and talking with her mouth full while recording.

I really tried. I really really tried. The story seems fine but the humor falls blank with the narrators. Going to be returning this one.

Kafer sounds like an insurance attorney reading stereo instructions. Then again, he reads this way in every book and it's ruined some for me if the story wasn't good. And this one isn't. Very clipped, monotone, and drab with the same voice for every character.

Zeller on the other hand reads each line like is a breathy romance novel for middle aged housewives. Seriously, almost every line is read as if it's internal thoughts of a 30 something widow while staring out of a window drinking chamomile tea. Her male voices sounding like a 10 year old boy imitating their dad. You can almost hear her fists pumping in marching fashion in front of her chest as she overly deepens her voice to read the male lines. Switching between these two each chapter leaves the listener hearing the same character with a vastly different voice and cadence depending on who is reading. Annoying at best.

Get someone good like RC Bray or Mark Boyett to read it and you may have a winner.

Two and half hours in and the most exciting thing to happen is a whorehouse recap. Too much about how someone else might tell the story. Not like "their version" but comparing literary styles.

Yep... returning this one.

***spoilers***
I was really looking forward to finishing this trilogy and it seems so was the author. The war basically wraps up about a third of the way in with "hey we have an H bomb!" "Lets kill Stalin with it" and then they do. In about that level of detail, description, and excitement.

The next eleven hours drones on about minor skirmishes and how all the characters get back to their old lives which includes a cringeworthy graphic description of a young widow having sex with a senior citizen.

Save your credits/$$$ and skip this book.

What did you like best about Desolator? What did you like least?

It will be the last Vandyke/Sievers book I ever listen to. YEAH!!!

Would you recommend Desolator to your friends? Why or why not?

NO! The shark has been jumped with a dead horse.

Would you be willing to try another one of Artie Sievers’s performances?

Never. His three voices he uses have finally worn through my last nerve.

Did Desolator inspire you to do anything?

End this series and never pick it back up again.

Any additional comments?

Got hooked on the plague wars with the prequel and loved it (when DJ gets the plague). The switch to Sievers really drags the entire series down. Bad voice acting, three voices, and takes characters with depth and flattens them out in to monolithic cutouts. I forced my way through the PW books as I like the story, through Artie's voice acting, and Jill's drop into being a mom, but this series is just beating a dead horse. You could say the shark has officially been jumped.

Great book (I'd read it in high school many years ago). The only detractor was that they would switch voice actors for the same person sometimes mid paragraph.

Really ran out of steam on this one. The entire story could have been told in 1/3 of the time. Really weak plot as well. I loved the first books but this one falls flat.
