Historia
In the wake of the Kejari, everything Oraya once thought to be true has been destroyed. A prisoner in her own kingdom, grieving the only family she ever had, and reeling from a gutting betrayal, she no longer even knows the truth of her own blood. She’s left only with one certainty: she cannot trust anyone, least of all Raihn. The House of Night, too, is surrounded by enemies. Raihn’s own nobles are none too eager to accept a Turned king, especially one who was once a slave. And the House of Blood digs its claws into the kingdom, threatening to tear it apart from the inside.

Even better than the first book
Revisado: 01-03-25
This storyteller has a gift. She has created an astonishing world of depth and intrigue, with marvelous characters. Especially the strong female characters. But she doesn’t skimp on giving the male characters depth and texture as well. And the narrators - Amanda, especially - bring the story to life in a way that has me thinking about it long after I’ve put it down.

Propelling narrative
Revisado: 01-03-25
I had never read a vampire fantasy before this one. I was skeptical, but from the first chapters I was hooked. I couldn’t put it down. The narrator - Amanda - brought the characters to life, and I found myself emotionally invested in the story in very short order. I can’t wait to start the next one!

Professor Pierre Aronnax, a noted French marine biologist and narrator of the story, master harpoonist Ned Land, and Aronnax's faithful assistant Conseil join the expedition.

Okay but for the “French”
Revisado: 08-20-23
I found it exceedingly distracting that the narrator- supposedly French - kept mispronouncing basic French names and places. I am not French, nor do I speak the language, yet even I know how to pronounce Consail, Provence, and Nantes! His voices were great, but as Professor Pierre Aronnax, he should have at least been able to pronounce his own name correctly.

Narrator NOT terrible. Just different.
Revisado: 05-05-17
I agree. I wish Jennifer Ikeda finished this series. But I don't think Amanda Leigh Cobb was terrible. She was just very different.
After I got over my initial frustration, I really started listening to the story itself. By the time I got to the battle and the story line with Nesta's arc? I was hooked. The scenes with Elaine are heartbreaking. I also loved Lucien's journey. And I caught myself aching for Mor during her . . . confession. (No spoilers!!)
For me, this one was less about Feyre and Rhys and more about the other characters. My heart was absolutely broken for Tamlin who I STILL think got screwed in this entire story, but that's just my opinion. I fall into the "Go, Tamlin! camp" because I don't think his actions were necessarily any more abusive than Rhys's actions under the mountain -- Anyway.
Give the STORY a chance. New narrator doesn't deserve to be raked across the coals for a decision that was not hers to make. I still enjoyed it!!!!!

Valentino's travels, truly Biblical in scope, bring him in contact with government soldiers, janjaweed-like militias, liberation rebels, hyenas and lions, disease and starvation, and a string of unexpected romances. Ultimately, Valentino finds safety in Kenya and, just after the millennium, is finally resettled in the United States, from where this novel is narrated.

Incredible journey, powerfully told
Revisado: 02-20-16
This is the most incredible book I have ever listened to. Powerfully moving, told with grace and charm... I am grateful for having accompanied Valentino Achak Deng through his journey, blessed to know his story.
Narrator Dion Graham was outstanding: The voices he gave to the various characters in this brilliant performance added tremendous color and texture, and the emotion he injected into the book's narrator's own voice truly conveyed Valentino's heart and soul.
Though I have discovered this novel as an adult, I think this should be required reading -- or listening -- for every American middle school or high school student. Sure, those years are challenging. But they are nothing compared to an escape from war-torn Sudan...

Please find a Castellano-speaking narrator!
Revisado: 01-16-16
The story is intriguing. However, the incorrect pronunciation of so much of the Spanish was distracting in the extreme and nearly ruined the experience. Someone who knows Spanish from Spain knows that the Ss are pronounced like "S", and only the Zs and soft Cs have the "theta" pronunciation. However, this narrator would stay "Thenora" for Senora, and "Platha (correct) del Thol (instead of Sol)" for the most popular plaza in Madrid, and she even had the protagonist refer to herself as "Thira" which was just wrong and terribly annoying. If I'd had the time to read the book I would have switched to the hard-copy version. But I stuck with it, enduring every painful "th" along the way.

This was a really fun listen. I LOVED all of the voices--especially the teenager and the 2 young kids. It was a sexy escape! The love between the two protagonists definitely grows and is paramount, but I also really enjoyed the other relationships in the book that evolved as well. Thayne really got at the heart of what it means to be a loving parent.

It's no coincidence when Grace Elland finds a vodka bottle next to the lifeless body of her boss, motivational speaker Sprague Witherspoon. The bottle is a terrifying - and deliberate - reminder of the horrors of her past. Grace retreats to her hometown to regroup and tries to put everything she’s learned about positive thinking into practice - a process that is seriously challenged on the world’s worst blind date. Awkward doesn’t begin to describe her evening with venture-capitalist Julius Arkwright.

This was a really enjoyable listen. I thought I knew who the killer was, but then, BAM! Also, the narrator is a keeper! I could tell the voices a part just fine. I especially liked the voices of Millicent and the old couple. I certainly didn't see that last plot twist coming....

But most of all, it is a gorgeous and unforgettable love story.

WOW - emotional and gripping
Revisado: 06-13-14
This is the first novel that I have read/listened to by Patry Francis. I loved how the story spanned so many decades. I especially like how the narrator did all the children's voices and then moved into adulthood. The snarkiness but empathy with Mila was really impressive in the very last part of the book. I felt like I could hear my own teenager in her sarcastic yet vulnerable state. That's great writing. I could not believe that she let her mom go the first time though!!!! That was really, really frustrating at first.
I'd recommend this for a summer beach day!

GREAT Narrator
Revisado: 01-10-14
I wasn't sure that I wanted to download this based on the first review, but I have to say that I am really glad that I did! Not only did I really like the narrator in particular, but I thought she did a really good job portraying all the different characters. Sometimes I find women's voices to be too high pitched or too monotone, but not with this one.
I have enjoyed Jayne Ann Krentz's novels in print, but this was my first audio book purchase for her work, and it was really very entertaining! I got a little confused about some of the dense plot twists towards the end, but it was still a really fun listen.
I love a good murder mystery romance!
