A delightful addition to the already excellent series. I’m already fantasizing about the next one. P.s. the bonus material was a great departure while still being relevant. More please, if Frank is inclined.

A fun and fast paced memoir about first coming of age as a queer woman in rural Appalachia and then working as an out lesbian pro domme in Los Angeles while going to grad school in the humanities. I thoroughly enjoyed both parts.

I found this book because of a short column that the author wrote for The New York Times about the complexities of telling people her real name as a pro domme. That article brought up a lot of interesting thoughts about the power dynamic there, and her experiences with how it could go wrong in different ways. When I saw that she had also written a memoir I bought it on the spot. As I had hoped, this book expanded on her thoughts about power imbalances and the dynamics of sex work and service work, as well as telling more stories about her life in her unique voice.

Lastly, the author narration of the audiobook was excellent.

Second time listening through this and really liked it the second time as well! A great romp through what it takes to invent everything once your stuck in the past after your rental time machine breaks. Manages to be both very interesting and informative while at the same time being light hearted and funny. Bought the hardcover edition half way through my first listen through, and it's great to have it to reference and check out while listening or whenever the fancy strikes. Also Ryan North's narration is perfect for the book.

I was very conflicted about my feelings for this book, oscillating back and forth between finding it really annoying / frustrating and really enjoying it. Overall though, the good parts far outweighed the frustrating ones, and I'm quite glad I read it.

With any popular book covering a technical subject, things have to be simplified to appeal to a general audience and be more approachable, and I totally get that, but in this case this process went way too far. Many of the technical sections and explanations, which constitute a significant portion of the book, generally felt simplified to the point of losing a lot of content, and occasionally being just wrong. Technical terms that would have been used throughout the book and become familiar were instead switched for easier to understand terms, despite the fact that this makes it harder to integrate these concepts into larger knowledge and understanding. This is always a tough balance to strike, but here it really felt like they were expecting way to little from the reader, and it was disappointing. Also, the Audiobook has no accompanying PDF of figures, which is a huge oversight for a book so heavily reliant on them. Also, for audiobook listeners, I'd particularly recommend trying it at 1.3x speed or more. The narrator spoke very slowly, and had many deeply annoying mispronunciations.

All of that said, this book tells an amazing story about the history of computer graphics from someone who was deeply involved from the very beginning all the way up through founding pixar, and this story is deeply interesting and well written. Despite the oversimplification of many of the technical areas, I still learned a lot about how certain kinds of computer graphics are done, and there was a lot of interesting content about correctly sampling and reconstructing the visual world in space and time. Just being able to see all of this history of the field that underlies so much of our modern lives from someone who was so deeply a part of it for so long made the book well worth it on its own.

This was my second or third time through this book and I loved it just as much as the other times! A lot of great history and setting, with tons of local richness and detail. I love the way that Stephenson starts you off with many different stories in two different timelines, and then gradually over the course of the book you see how they all come together and are connected. Masterfully done from start to finish. The narration for the audiobook is also great.

Just finished listening to this for the second or third time, and it was marvelous and intriguing, just as I remembered it from the first time. Very well written and captivating story of the quest for a method to determine longitude, and how John Harrison devoted his life to creating a clock that could accurately tell time across an ocean voyage of weeks. Wonderful details about the clocks he created, with technical insight into his innovations and detailed discussion of the stormy political issues that got in the way.
I can't recommend this book enough, and my only complaint is that it's only four hours long instead of eight or twelve.

The first astronaut's memoir I've read (or listened to anyway). Overall I liked it, even if the main character annoyed me at times. My main complaint, that I think I'll run into with almost any book like this, was a lack of technical detail and an oversimplification of complex issues. I realize that it's a general audience book but I feel like it could have done more to go into some of the interesting technical details that the author is certainly deeply familiar with. Overall though it was a great trip through the life of a modern astronaut with a lot of lovely details about the modern space program and amazing things like spacewalking on Hubble.

Very good. The story and performance were riveting and kept me listening almost non stop

What did you like best about this story?

So many amazing ups and downs, thrills, suspense, celebrities, piles of money, this book has it all. And having it be read by the person who lived it is fantastic.

This is an amazing second novel by Andy Weir. Similar realistic and well thought out action as found in The Martian, but with a totally different environment and protagonist.

Rosario Dawson does an amazing job as the narrator and main character.

Stunning.

Very weak Plot development. Like one of those action movies that's just fights and explosions for 90 minutes. It can work for a 90 minute movie, but it gets pretty old in a 9 hour book.

Also totally lacked an ending.
