Historia
One afternoon in November 1975, ten-year-old Miranda Larkin comes home from school to find her house eerily quiet. Her mother is missing. Nothing else is out of place. There is no sign of struggle. Her mom’s pocketbook remains in the front hall, in its usual spot. So begins a mystery that will span a lifetime. What happened to Jane Larkin? Investigators suspect Jane’s husband. A criminal defense attorney, Dan Larkin would surely be an expert in outfoxing the police.

Brilliant Domestic Drama
Revisado: 11-10-23
Jane Larkin was a 39 year old mother when she went missing from her suburban home in 1975. Detective Tom Glover suspected her attorney husband Dan of murder, but there simply wasn’t enough evidence. Jane and Dan’s daughter Miriam who was 10 at the time suffers from bouts of depression for years following Jane’s disappearance. Her older brothers Alex and Jeff grieve in their own ways over the years with varying opinions on whether or not their fastidious, self absorbed father is a killer.
Four decades later after Dan Larkin has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, Jeff reaches out to his childhood friend Philip Solomon to write a book about the tragedy. Philip is a successful author struggling with writer’s block, and while he’s not fond of dredging up the past, the mystery of what happened to Jane Larkin is irresistible.
This character driven novel far exceeded my high expectations after recently reading and enjoying Defending Jacob. I loved how the book is separated into sections told from different points of view including Jane Larkin’s. The characters are so well developed and the story is brilliantly written with such a great ending. I listened to the audiobook and the multicast narration is excellent. The voice actors for Jane and Dan Larkin were outstanding. I simply cannot stop thinking about this story. Highly recommend.
P.S. I hate you Dan.

Roach would rather be listening to the latest episode of her favorite true crime podcast than assisting the boring and predictable customers at her local branch of the bookstore Spines, where she's worked her entire adult life. A serious true crime junkie, Roach looks down her nose at the pumpkin-spice-latte-drinking casual fans who only became interested in the genre once it got trendy. But when Laura, a pretty and charismatic children's bookseller, arrives to help rejuvenate the struggling bookstore branch, Roach recognizes in her an unexpected kindred spirit.

Revisado: 07-21-23
A darkly funny story about a serial killer obsessed bookseller who has a disturbing infatuation with a coworker. Told from the POV’s of both women, the performance on the audiobook is excellent.
Roach thinks she and Laura are going to be great friends when Laura is brought in to help the store to turn a profit. Roach’s interest in true crime is based in entertainment and voyeurism. Laura has a tragic personal reason for finding the crime obsessed offensive. When Laura is cold and unfriendly to her, Roach becomes more and more obsessed and stalkerish. It’s a great slow burn character driven psychological thriller that showcases the obsession with podcasts and all things murder.
“I wonder if serial killers think about me as much as I think about them.” I didn’t realize the actual shirt exists. Go to Etsy. It does! 😂

Historia
Katrina Kim may be broke, the black sheep of her family, and slightly unhinged, but she isn’t a stalker. Her obsession with her co-worker, Kurt, is just one of many coping mechanisms—like her constant shape and number rituals, or the way scenes from her favorite children’s book bleed into her vision whenever she feels anxious. But when Katrina finds a cryptic message from Kurt implying he’s aware of her surveillance, her tenuous hold on a normal life crumbles. Driven by compulsion, she makes a midnight visit to the Cayatoga Bridge—just in time to witness Kurt’s suicide.

Liar, Dreamer, Thief
The lovable heroine of Liar, Dreamer, Thief is Katrina Kim who is the daughter of Korean immigrants. She suffers from mental illness and has developed an unhealthy obsession with a male coworker that she’s pretty much stalking. When this coworker vanishes, he leaves a cryptic message for Katrina and she vows to find out what has happened with him. She also escapes to a fantasy world in her mind as a safe place when life throws too much at her. This is a book about coping mechanisms as a way of survival.
I had a difficult time getting ahold of this one early and when it was finally released, my usually well stocked library did not have the audio. Thankfully Audible had it and I grabbed it. Sadly the only review on Audible was a one star review from someone who clearly either didn’t understand it or even read it for that matter. While this book is not for everyone, Maria Dong has perfectly captured a complex character in Katrina and has written a beautiful and touching story.

Historia
No electricity, no family, no connection to the outside world. For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter, Finch, have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods. And that's exactly the way Cooper wants it, because he's got a lot to hide. Finch has been raised on the books filling the cabin’s shelves and the beautiful but brutal code of life in the wilderness. But she’s starting to push back against the sheltered life Cooper has created for her - and he’s still haunted by the painful truth of what it took to get them there.

To write much about this would spoil it for others. The story is unique and so very well done. The narration is simply perfect. When you start the story, you will be confused. It’s part of the process. Be patient and let everything unfold. Easily the best book of the year for me!

Just ok.
Revisado: 01-19-21
The narrator is a challenge. Her hard pronunciation of “r’s” gets annoying as well as trying too hard on voices of children and loudly emphasizing “he SAID.” Yikes. The story is interesting and I may have liked it better with someone else reading it.

So much potential...
Revisado: 12-22-19
I really thought I was going to like this one. The storyline was good, but it ended up being too ambitious and trying too hard. No I don’t believe the two people who had gone through so much fell in love so quickly and YES they truly DID endanger the child’s life. Note to the author: Do not put a child to bed if you think they have a concussion! Nice that Jo checked to see if Ursa was breathing the next morning...? Then we get to the narrator. If you decide to listen to this the first thing you notice is how badly she does male voices and the second thing is how she puts an emphasis on the word “said” after 3/4 of the dialogue. It was like fingernails on a chalkboard. Do yourself a favor and take a hard pass on this one.
