Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

This is a fictional story that uses real persons as period settings in a highly believable way. Among the finest books I have enjoyed in this genre.

Early one morning Commissario Guido Brunetti of the Venice Police confronts a grisly sight when the body of a young man is fished out of a fetid canal. All the clues point to a violent mugging, but for Brunetti the motive of robbery seems altogether too convenient.

Historia
In The Lewis Man, the second book of the trilogy, Fin Macleod has returned to the Isle of Lewis, the storm-tossed, wind-scoured outer Hebridean island where he was born and raised. Having left behind his adult life in Edinburgh - including his wife and his career in the police force - the former Detective Inspector is intent on repairing past relationships and restoring his parents' derelict cottage. His plans are interrupted when an unidentified corpse is recovered from a Lewis peat bog. The only clue to its identity is a DNA match to a local farmer, the now-senile Tormod Macdonald....

Solid and entertaining
Revisado: 06-01-23
A pretty tightly structured theme and plot. Marginally better if the main character’s self doubt were less often expressed and if piwers were not quite so profound. But I enjoyed the book; a break from the real world.

A literary feast
Revisado: 01-29-23
I believe that in the many decades I have read this work is perhaps the finest I have encountered. Beautiful, masterfully crafted story graced by a literal torrent of tightly woven metaphors and simile, both direct snd subtle. What a joy to read for anyone who loves elegant deployment of language. And the voice give to this audio book did it justice. I have never been so sorry to reach the end of a work of literature. This one will stand the test of time for I dare say at least a century. Bravo! Bravo!

Historia
If the broken neon signs, shuttered storefronts, and sub-standard housing didn’t tip you off, you’ve just wandered into the city of “Undisclosed”. You don’t want to be caught dead here, because odds are you just might find yourself rising from the grave. That hasn’t stopped tourists from visiting to check out the unusual phenomena that hangs around our town like radioactive fallout. Interdimensional parasites feeding on human hosts, paranormal cults worshipping demonic entities, vengeful teenage sorcerers, we’ve got it all.

Are there Any Good Parents, Really?
Revisado: 10-20-22
A book recommended by multiple friends usually translates into a good read. Definitely the case here. Never a lull in this book. A wonderfully inventive yet grounded story that reminds the reader of what is important to different people in different situations. If you see a feral cat struggling to survive and want to take it home w you to make it well, you will like this book a lot.

Wizard of Oz meets Bible
Revisado: 10-15-22
The story, which has a real Wizard of oz pattern to its structure, is engaging enough. But it seems like a cliche, right down to the use of tye “King” and a character named “Faith”. In the end its message is no less make believe than it has been since the dawn of human history.
