Out of order
Revisado: 03-23-24
I know some other people mentioned this in their reviews, but it’s a big deal. Whoever compiled this collection put the books in the wrong order, and it takes away from the flow and enjoyment, since the books reference things that happened earlier in the series. The correct order is The Narrows, Echo Park, The Overlook. Putting Echo Park first left me without background info from The Narrows, and when I got to The Narrows a lot of the questions had already been answered and the suspense was lost. I honestly can’t believe that this hasn’t been fixed.
The stories were really good, lots of action and hard boiled detective work. The performance was mostly good, a bit too much background and interlude music.
And I am so glad that other people mentioned the skipping, I thought it was just me.
Overall, I recommend buying this. Having three books to listen to is super entertaining. But listening in the order presented will annoy the heck out of you.

Historia
Newly minted chief resident at Boston Memorial Hospital Noah Rothauser is swamped in his new position, from managing the surgical schedules to dealing with the fallouts from patient deaths. Known for its medical advances, the famed teaching hospital has fitted several ORs as "hybrid operating rooms of the future" - an improvement that seems positive until an anesthesia error during a routine procedure results in the death of an otherwise healthy man.

Very Fetching
Revisado: 02-01-24
The verbiage is a little dated, the action takes place in the present but the words used are from the past. This took away from the overall experience. Also, the narrator has a very choppy cadence and his voice goes up at the end of phrases. He can do better, as evidenced by his reading of the credits at the end.
But, it’s a good story and the times when I was able to just listen without paying attention to how it was read, I enjoyed it.

Historia
Cass Neary made her name in the 70s as a photographer embedded in the burgeoning punk movement in New York City. Her pictures earned her a brief moment of fame. Thirty years later she is adrift, on her way down, and almost out when an old acquaintance sends her on a mercy gig to interview a famously reclusive photographer who lives on an island in Maine. When she arrives Down East, Cass stumbles across a decades-old mystery that is still claiming victims, and she finds one final shot at redemption.

It has its moments
Revisado: 08-09-22
I was relatively engaged until about 2/3 in, then I stopped caring. I realized that, beyond basic human empathy, I didn't have any interest in what happened to any of the characters. I felt like the author would periodically remind the reader that Cass was edgy, just in case we forgot. I toughed it out to the end, because it must have some redeeming qualities to have been rated so high, but the last third of the book offered a bit of closure, not much more.

Historia
Detective Porter and the team have been pulled from the hunt for Anson Bishop, the Four Monkey Killer, by the feds. When the body of a young girl is found beneath the frozen waters of Jackson Park Lagoon, she is quickly identified as Ella Reynolds, missing three weeks. But how did she get there? The lagoon froze months earlier. More baffling? She's found wearing the clothes of another girl, missing less than two days.

I was hooked the whole time.
Revisado: 02-03-22
Almost a great book! I was fully invested in the story, and wanted to drive around the block a few times so I didn't have to step away from the story every day when I got home.
That being said, the way that this book "ended" was horrible. I just finished and part of me wants to buy the next one in the series, and the other part of me doesn't want to support an author who made the decision to end the book that way. I'll sleep on it.

Very Entertaining, one small flaw
Revisado: 02-03-22
I stumbled on this book, not being familiar with J.D. Barker, and am very glad I did. The story line is interesting and imaginative, and the characters' actions fit who they are. There are bad guys who do bad things, and good guys who try to stop the bad. Overall well written, and I've already purchased the next in the series.
However, I spent the first half of the book incredibly annoyed at a huge mistake/assumption that the detectives make, and finally was able to yell "DUH" when that plot hole was finally filled.

Amazingly Entertaining
Revisado: 08-13-21
Wow, what a great book. I don't want to say too much and be a spoiler, so I'll just comment that this book is a fun Science Fiction book, with an emphasis on the Science. I'm not a scientist, but I am assuming that everything that is described is accurate.
The narration works perfectly. There is a particular character's voice that is done in a way that just works.
I'm not typically a huge fan of series books, but in this case, I kinda want a sequel. am interested to see what happens next.

All show
Revisado: 02-03-21
I've heard it said that a good writer l TELLS the reader what happens, while a great writer SHOWS the story. Well, this book is all show.
This long book is not background noise, things are constantly happening and you'll need to pay attention. and it's worth it, because even though this is more than a full day's worth of story, or goes by quickly and when it's over you want another mountain full of adventure.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Phenomenal entertainment and thoughtful commentary
Revisado: 02-17-19
Okay, this is a long book, so prepare to invest some time. I enjoy longer books, as I feel like I'm getting my money's worth, but this one's longer than most. About 3/4 of the way through, I wondered why it wasn't 2 books, but then BAM! It became obvious to me that it couldn't be separated, it was a complete thought, and a great thought at that.
This book kept me entertained, but feeling like I was catching onto a undercurrent of social commentary, and questioning what within myself made me notice that I didn't like any characters. I was enjoying the story, but feeling guilty about it. Then the author started explaining what was truly going on under the surface in a way that totally fit within the action...it was glorious.
I totally want to share details about what I'm taking about, but am not going to spoil anything. Just know that this book is worth buying.
And I just read an article about some of the 'leading' art critics trashed this book as juvenile and cliche, but I don't get it...just because something is popular it isn't good??? Whatever. I have been reading all of my life and have a degree in creative writing and I dig this book, for what it's worth.

Historia
Set in a lethal pro football league 700 years in the future, The Rookie is a story that combines the intense gridiron action of Any Given Sunday with the space opera style of Star Wars and the criminal underworld of The Godfather. Aliens and humans alike play positions based on physiology, creating receivers that jump 25 feet into the air, linemen that bench-press 1,200 pounds, and linebackers that literally want to eat you. Organized crime runs every franchise, games are fixed, and rival players are assassinated.

Revisado: 11-21-18
I'm not really a #sports fan, but someone told me that the #GFL books would be good regardless. #TrueStory.
I think I related too much to the protagonist, the #torturedhero, the #chosenone. In a weird way, I think my background was similar, and I had the same sort of #comingofage.
Anyway, this is an awesome book and I downloaded the best one right away!
