Historia
Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to become Southern California’s first giraffes. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow.

Mesmerizing
Revisado: 12-24-24
The character of “Woody” is so rich and the arc of his story full of adventure and yearning. Yet it is in the life contemplation that the author really shines. Taking the reader on a Tom Sawyer-like adventure when Woody is a teen, the author weaves effortlessly to the man aging in a nursing home. The giraffes, perfect symbols of fragile hope, snuffle and chomp onions and capture our hearts. This is a literary tale of the power of memory and the unexpected guideposts we lean on in life. The ending is poignant and powerful. Rutledge has created a book that is entertaining, educational, and tender. The images and ideas will stay with the reader long after the last page.

Historia
Published in 1945, Cannery Row focuses on the acceptance of life as it is: both the exuberance of community and the loneliness of the individual. Drawing on his memories of the real inhabitants of Monterey, California, Steinbeck interweaves the stories of Doc, Henri, Mack and his boys, and the other characters in this world where only the fittest survive, to create a novel that is at once one of his most humorous and most poignant works.

Exquisite use of language
Revisado: 04-09-24
Steinbeck is a master of description making the town of Cannery Row come alive as a full character. He is the king of the simile with each one vivid and surprising. They linger long after the story has ended, a photograph in the mind. Each character, animals included, is nuanced and full of complex humanity. I loved it.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Brilliant and uplifting
Revisado: 05-30-23
Garmus takes us into the 50s and 60s through the lens of a woman scientist. Her characters are complex, quirky, and memorable. The issues of gender disparity and abuse are handled without victimization or revenge tropes (though there are satisfying comeuppances. I will be thinking about Elizabeth Zott for a very long time.

Historia
For nearly 80 years, a huge portion of coastal South Africa was closed off to the public. With many of its pits now deemed "overmined" and abandoned, American journalist Matthew Gavin Frank sets out across the infamous Diamond Coast to investigate an illicit trade that supplies a global market. Immediately, he became intrigued by the ingenious methods used in facilitating smuggling - particularly, the illegal act of sneaking carrier pigeons onto mine property, affixing diamonds to their feet, and sending them into the air.

The writing itself was beautiful, so much so that individual sentences should be savored. The story however assaulted me and had no redemptive value. The pacing was aggressive without giving time for the reader to come up for air. A tunnel into a dark world without a light.
