Historia
Smedley Butler was the most celebrated warfighter of his time. Best-selling books were written about him. Hollywood adored him. Wherever the flag went, “The Fighting Quaker” went - serving in nearly every major overseas conflict from the Spanish War of 1898 until the eve of World War II.

Too many leftist side comments
Revisado: 03-07-23
The author cannot help himself from making consistent leftist comments even to the point of being anti-American. The book would’ve been better if he just told the story rather than making snide side comments throughout the book.

Historia
God Save Texas is a journey through the most controversial state in America. It is a red state, but the cities are blue and among the most diverse in the nation. Oil is still king, but Texas now leads California in technology exports. Low taxes and minimal regulation has produced extraordinary growth, but also striking income disparities. Texas looks a lot like the America that Donald Trump wants to create. Texas native Lawrence Wright gives us a colorful, wide-ranging portrait of a state that not only reflects our country as it is, but as it may become.

The book was obviously written by an Austinite Liberal. It’s written in the same manner and attitude that ruined Texas Monthly.

Historia
The most recent state to join the union, Hawaii is the only one to have once been a royal kingdom. After its discovery by Captain Cook in the late 18th century, Hawaii was fought over by European powers determined to take advantage of its position as the crossroads of the Pacific. The arrival of the first missionaries marked the beginning of the struggle between a native culture with its ancient gods, sexual libertinism, and rites of human sacrifice and the rigid values of the Calvinists.

Wonderfully Objective Telling
Revisado: 07-03-19
Having gone to college in Hawaii for a time and having spent substantial time on the islands, I found this to be the most comprehensive and objective telling of the Hawaiian Story. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in American History.

The list of course is dated and with the economy growing as quickly as it has, the book is not able to cover a lot of the new tech moguls. There is also a pretty big gap in listing the oil wealth from fracking, but the book is very fun to read.

Historia
As the 20th century began, oil in Texas was easy to find, but the quantities were too small to attract industrial capital and production. Then, on January 10, 1901, the Spindletop gusher blew in. Over the next 50 years, oil transformed Texas, creating a booming economy that built cities, attracted out-of-state workers and companies, funded schools and universities, and generated wealth that raised the overall standard of living - even for blue-collar workers. No other 20th-century development had a more profound effect upon the state.

Historia
The tale of the Bechtel family dynasty is a classic American business story. It begins with Warren A. "Dad" Bechtel, who led a consortium that constructed the Hoover Dam. From that auspicious start, the family and its eponymous company would go on to build the world, from the construction of airports in Hong Kong and Doha to pipelines and tunnels in Alaska and Europe to mining and energy operations around the globe.

Your Liberal Bias is showing
Revisado: 03-29-18
The book is very well researched and facts intensive. However, the author is extremely bias toward the left. I was glad to have listened, but I wish she had not forced political viewpoints instead of allowing the reader to come to their own conclusions.

A must read for anyone in the oil and gas business

It is without a doubt the quintessential first book that must be read for anyone working in the petrochemical industry. If only as a fan of history, it should be a trophy on one’s bookshelf. I’ve listened to it multiple times, and it gets better each time.

Historia
Everyone knew it was crazy to try to extract oil and natural gas buried in shale rock deep below the ground. Everyone, that is, except a few reckless wildcatters - who risked their careers to prove the world wrong. Things looked grim for American energy in 2006. Oil production was in steep decline and natural gas was hard to find. The Iraq War threatened the nation’s already tenuous relations with the Middle East. China was rapidly industrializing and competing for resources.

There’s not enough books on audible covering the recent history in the oil patch. This book gives an excellent account of the recent changes in how America obtains oil and gas from previously untapped plays.
