Historia
With rigorous original scholarship and creative narration, Lisa Brooks recovers a complex picture of war, captivity, and Native resistance during the "First Indian War" (later named King Philip's War) by relaying the stories of Weetamoo, a female Wampanoag leader, and James Printer, a Nipmuc scholar, whose stories converge in the captivity of Mary Rowlandson. Brooks leads us to a new understanding of the history of colonial New England and of American origins.

Compelling narrative ruined by terrible narration
Revisado: 05-25-20
The narrator may be the worst I've heard in the many years I've been an Audible subscriber. She has no rhythm to her speech. Her mispronunciations are a distraction. For example, she pronounces the name of the Taunton River as if it were named after the Tauntaun creature from the planet Hoth of Star Wars. Which is disheartening because the author has such a compelling and important argument to interpret and it's a shame that it's lost in the narration.

Historia
Ginger Stuyvesant, an American heiress living in London during World War I, is engaged to Captain Benjamin Hartshorne, an intelligence officer. Ginger is a medium for the Spirit Corps, a special Spiritualist force. Each soldier heading for the front is conditioned to report to the mediums of the Spirit Corps when they die so the corps can pass instant information about troop movements to military intelligence. Ginger and her fellow mediums contribute a great deal to the war efforts, so long as they pass the information through appropriate channels.

Well, this is awkward
Revisado: 09-18-18
The book has a good story that is hindered by poor narration. And this is awkward because it's the author who does the narration. Unfortunately, the author cannot do British, French, or German accents. The accents made me cringe and I nearly stopped listening. But I was intrigued by the story so I kept going.

The author's love for Spain is infectious. After listening to the book, I wanted to get on the next plane to visit Spain. Highly recommended.

Yummy
Revisado: 06-13-17
I came away with more respect for American cuisine after listening to this book. Our food is not merely an imitation of other cuisines; it is a complex reflection of history, immigration, and the creation of new foods. The only thing I was sad about was that the audio version didn't come with a print out of the recipes included in the book.

Historia
When two Union soldiers stumble onto a plantation in northern Georgia on a warm May day in 1864, the last thing they expect is to see the Union flag flying high - or to be greeted by a group of freed slaves and their Jewish mistress. Little do they know that this place has an unusual history. Twelve years prior, Adelaide Mannheim - daughter of Mordecai, the only Jewish planter in the county - was given her own maid, a young slave named Rachel. The two became friends, and soon they discovered a secret.

Didn't get past the first half hour
Revisado: 12-24-16
The story seemed to be based on no historical research whatsoever. I had to stop listening when one of the main characters tells the Br'er Rabbit Tar Baby story with details that seemed to come straight from Disney's Song of the South movie. The narrator, however, did a good job with stilted dialog.

Historia
The year is 1878, peak of the Texas cattle trade. The place is Dodge City, Kansas, a saloon-filled cow town jammed with liquored-up adolescent cowboys and young Irish hookers. Violence is random and routine, but when the burned body of a mixed-blood boy named Johnnie Sanders is discovered, his death shocks a part-time policeman named Wyatt Earp. And it is a matter of strangely personal importance to Doc Holliday, the frail 26-year-old dentist who has just opened an office at No. 24, Dodge House.

Hokey narration
Revisado: 08-15-16
I gave this book a good shot but after two hours of listening to the "Aw shucks, Ma'am" narration I quit. The narration was every stereotype of southern and western speech. The plot was uninteresting.

I've read and enjoyed other Meltzer books but this book just didn't work. It felt like I was reading the conspiracy theory comments on a newspaper article. As if the author wanted to throw in every conspiracy he'd ever heard of.

Historia
The profoundly inspiring and fully documented saga of Joan of Arc, the young peasant girl whose "voices" moved her to rally the French nation and a reluctant king against British invaders in 1428, has fascinated artistic figures as diverse as William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Voltaire, George Bernard Shaw, Bertolt Brecht, Carl Dreyer, and Robert Bresson. Was she a divinely inspired saint? A schizophrenic? A demonically possessed heretic, as her persecutors and captors tried to prove?

A Charming Book and Still Relevant
Revisado: 02-09-15
My 6 year old granddaughter and I listened to this twice while on a car trip. My granddaughter is still talking about the book and named one of her dolls Ramona. Even though the kindergarten of 30+ years ago is quite different from today's kindergarten, there is still a universal appeal that connected to my granddaughter and helped her deal with some of her own kindergarten concerns. The narrator does a lovely job.
