Historia
Shelby works as a dog walker in northern California, and she’s just finished up her bi-weekly trip to the park with a husky named Pluto. When she brings him back to his house, she finds his owner - Todd Burke, a well-known local businessman and founder of an organic supplements company - lying on the bathroom floor, dead. A detective arrives on the scene. As she interviews Shelby, the body is inspected by a medical examiner, and more cops search Todd’s home, it becomes clear that the victim’s life was less picture-perfect than his clean-cut persona might lead you to believe.

Great story, shoddy editing, and too many mistakes
Revisado: 04-25-25
I enjoyed this story a lot but the audio editing was abysmal! You can clearly hear where pickups were recorded because the change in quality is very noticeable and jarring. Definitely not the quality I have come to expect from Audible. Also, what on earth was that pronunciation of “Marin” in the second chapter? You’d think that the actors or producers would know how to pronounce the place the story is set…jeez. I enjoyed the story and the performances were good for the most part but there are too many mistakes and editing issues to rate it higher.

…the rasp in the one actor’s voice was borderline unlistenable. This usually doesn’t bother me, but in this instance it really did. Not pleasant listening to with headphones. But otherwise a good story!

Compelling mystery
Revisado: 11-17-24
Loved the authentic autistic representation. More of this please! Story was compelling. The multicast scenes were excellently produced with the sound effects. But the main narrator’s mouth noises got so bad about halfway through…it made for a difficult listening experience.

Historia
It seemed to me that many of the moments when my autism had caused problems, or at least marked me out as different, were those moments when I had come up against some unspoken law about how a girl or a woman should be, and failed to meet it. An autism diagnosis in midlife enabled Joanne Limburg to finally make sense of why her emotional expression, social discomfort and presentation had always marked her as an outsider.

Great book / poor narration
Revisado: 10-27-24
It was hard to focus on the author’s excellent writing because of the quality of the narration. She had a decent enough voice, but there were so many awful mouth noises when she spoke! It was torturous to listen to with headphones. I recommend listening to this one over your device’s speakers. Again, it’s written very well, but it was really hard to focus because of all of the extra noises.

Historia
In ancient Rome, all the best stories have one thing in common - murder. In one 50-year period, 26 emperors were murdered. But what did killing mean in a city where gladiators fought to the death to sate a crowd? In A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Emma Southon examines a trove of real-life homicides from Roman history to explore Roman culture, including how perpetrator, victim, and the act itself were regarded by ordinary people. Inside ancient Rome’s darkly fascinating history, we see how the Romans viewed life and death and what it means to be human.

Dear adults who grew up on Horrible Histories, especially liked Rotten Romans, and wished they knew a little more about all things murder - this is the listen for you! I learned a ton and was thoroughly entertained. Excellent narration. Bravo!

I was fortunate to attend a few of these live recordings, and it is so nice to hear them all again! Chris, Claire, and the Punch Brothers have crafted a charming, silly, and beautiful radio show. And the guests! Such a talented line up. I do hope there are more in the future.

Soulless narration
Revisado: 10-06-24
Was this narrated by AI? Because it totally lacked emotion. It felt so impersonal, and the narrator’s delivery was so dry that I lost track of the story. I love the movie WALL·E and was excited to hear a short story based on these beloved characters…but this was such a fail. Come on Disney, you can do way better than this.

This audio novella is a stand-alone prequel to the Cormac Reilly series. Twenty-two-year-old Niamh Turley thought she had problems dealing with the obnoxious principal of the school she’s teaching in as well as the anxious parents of her little charges, but when she wakes one morning to a missing roommate and a garda knocking on her door, her life spirals out of control fast....

Inconsistent and Confusing
Revisado: 08-29-24
Great narrator, but as many others have pointed out, there are several plot details that don’t add up. The Truman Show just came out on DVD, but Pharrell’s Happy is a well known song? Inconsistencies like this made it impossible to know when this story was supposed to have taken place, and were very distracting. I’m glad this was free, because I would have been very disappointed to have paid for this novella.

Historia
Goldengrove’s towers and twisted chimneys rose at the very edge of the peaceful Weald, a stone’s throw from the poisonous marshes and merciless waters of Rye Bay. Young Tabby Palethorp had been running wild there, ever since her mother grew too ill to leave her room. I was the perfect choice to give Tabby a good English education: thoroughly respectable and far too plain to tempt her lonely father, Sir Kit, to indiscretion. I knew better than to trust my new employer with the truth about my past. But knowing better couldn’t stop me from yearning for impossible things.

Great concept but ultimately frustrating
Revisado: 03-06-24
I loved the idea of this novel. A gothic novel ala Jane Eyre/Rebecca with queer romances? Yes please. Unfortunately the book did not live up to this promising concept. It dragged on a lot with (in my opinion) unnecessary detail, and the narrator was atrocious. I don’t know who told her that she was capable of performing an authentic British accent, but they lied because it was borderline unlistenable. I still enjoyed the basic story, but it could have been better. Glad this was available in the plus catalogue because it wouldn’t have been worth a credit.

Historia
Judith Potts is 77 years old and blissfully happy. She lives on her own in a faded mansion just outside Marlow, there’s no man in her life to tell her what to do or how much whisky to drink, and to keep herself busy she sets crosswords for The Times newspaper. One evening, while out swimming in the Thames, Judith witnesses a brutal murder. The local police don’t believe her story, so she decides to investigate for herself and is soon joined in her quest by Suzie, a salt-of-the-earth dog-walker, and Becks, the prim and proper wife of the local vicar.

Charming thriller but…
Revisado: 02-26-24
Loved the characters, great writing, great narrator…I was all set to give this one 5 stars across the board, except there are many mistakes left in this audiobook recording. Lots of unnecessary mouth noises, hard plosives, and a few sentences that start, stop, and correct themselves - all things that should have been caught in the editing process. The hard plosives and mouth noises made it difficult to listen to with headphones. But apart from these editing errors I really enjoyed the story!
