Charming is an insufficient word.
Revisado: 03-28-24
It seems like a weird mix - old folks home, elephants, New Hampshire - but, wouldn’t you know, this whole story just works. And not in an “oh that was cute” infantilizing kind of “works,” but more of an “I didn’t see the emotional depth and shared humanity this story exudes coming” kind of “works.” The plot is simple enough kids can enjoy it and yet the layers of life folded into each character and perspective is soul satisfying for those of us with more years and wrinkles like Pearl. The performance is beautifully done and perfectly paced, I couldn’t ask for better from another reader.
I would like to add, that as a resident of Vermont, I plan to remain hopeful that one of those wild New Hampshire Elephants might shuffle on over our way. We’ll have produce at the ready!

Lighthearted and quirky done right
Revisado: 02-24-24
My preteen daughter and I just finished a 3,000 mile road trip requiring maaaaaany hours of charging stops. This book, both because Boettcher’s performance is fantastic and Biglow’s quirky tale is lighthearted and fun, kept us both sane and entertained when we needed it most! My daughter’s succinct review - “can we start the next one?” - was very gratifying and exactly the note to end our trip on!

She is determined to convince her parents, her friends, everyone at her school, and the whole world that fairies are real. AKA: Ella & Leo Saved Our Car Trip.
Revisado: 11-11-23
After listening to the first book in the series, this book about Ella and Leo threw me off a bit. I expected it to have some continuity from the Ella and Leo's escapades with the ROARS in book one, so when this began with them a bit older and with no STEM context I had to mentally reset to enjoy this book as a stand alone story. That being said, it's very entertaining and the characters not only save the fairies, but they saved my sanity on a multi hour car trip with my five children.
My kids really enjoyed the journey from craft store supplies to theatrical suspense Dave Reed creates here. Breaking into Ella's world of imaginative play - aka her room - Leo's (all too relatable) lack of impulse control unlocks opportunities for Ella to experience something magical that all kids (regardless of their sibling's role) can appreciate. I found the story to be all the more entertaining with how Bonniejean Boettcher uses inflections and brings parental humor into the telling.
I am hopeful for more books by Reed and read by Boettcher to be published here soon! Even if the books' stories don't run together one after the other, they are fun, light hearted and well done.

A quiet car ride for once - this book is awesome
Revisado: 08-24-23
Time for Trouble was a fantastic audiobook for my whole family and the narrator did a smashing job of bringing the story to life! The characters Ella and Leo were relatable both in their dynamic and in their differences and the incredible situations they found themselves in provided delightful scope for my kid’s imaginations.
We enjoyed the “roars,” Ella’s innovations (yay girl power!!), the reactions of the adults involved (will future books have more 911 calls??) and - from my position as Mom - the basic lessons that sacrificing achievement for the better good doesn’t mean a loss of self. I cannot wait for another Adventure of Ella and Leo to be available on audible!

Historia
Christian Cooper is a self-described “Blerd” (Black nerd), an avid comics fan and expert birder who devotes every spring to gazing upon the migratory birds that stop to rest in Central Park, just a subway ride away from where he lives in New York City. While in the park one morning in May 2020, Cooper was engaged in the birdwatching ritual that had been a part of his life since he was ten years old when what might have been a routine encounter with a dog walker exploded age-oldracial tensions. Cooper’s viral video of the incident would send shock waves through the nation.

Compassionate Education on Birds and Race
Revisado: 07-21-23
I appreciate how Cooper combines birding with his human experience. Whether you come at this book with an interest in ornithology or a broader BLM/CRT curiosity, there is so much to learn from his story and I value the self-reflection he invites of his readers. He certainly doesn’t pull punches, but his compassion for the world around him clearly shows and is a much needed source of hope in our community/country/world today.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Painful, but necessary.
Revisado: 02-16-23
The trials that Damon endures in his young life were horrible enough to make this book quite difficult to “enjoy.” But Kingsolver does a fantastic job of creating characters you want to care about and an even better job of explaining the how and why of those character’s plights to give the reader a humbling lesson in empathy. Her nuanced way of discussing the crippling impacts of our national complacency toward opioids - especially in communities dependent upon the land economy - lands squarely on the reader’s conscious and begs them to not look away.

Take what you will
Revisado: 10-01-22
As a parent of five, there are few parenting books with new ideas. I enjoyed this book because it has many different perspectives, but I also feel it is presented in a naive way. Idealistic may be the best word to describe it. I know some of these ideas will work with some of my kids, but to view the nuances here as a cure all will surely lead to failure.

Truly evocative of The Dark Is Rising series
Revisado: 09-29-22
I have read and shared these books many times over the years. Each can standalone on its own merits as a magically mysterious moment in the never ending battle between Evil and the Good … as a whole, the series presents a satisfying reassurance that, with selfless and desperate individual effort, ordinary people can preserve goodness regardless of the enticing temptations of the powers of darkness.
Beautifully and clearly written so as to be understandable
