Very good

4 out of 5 stars

I bought this audiobook because I enjoyed her first novel so much. This has many of the virtues of her first book, but is not quite as good. Still, the characters are once again well-drawn, the relationships are complex and interesting, and the mystery is intriguing. Loses a little at the end, but I still enjoyed it immensely. I look forward to her next book. I will say that I disagree with those who did not find some of the animal rights activists acting as thugs believable. I have seen it my own experience, though I agree with much of what they say.

Great characters and dialogue

I enjoyed this audiobook immensely. The characters are well-drawn and fascinating. The dialogue is outstanding. You almost forget about the mystery, the characters' are so interesting. The plot, however, is also arresting and I was enthralled until the end of this tape.

Not the best read I have had lately, but above average. The pace was brisk and the characters were likable and interesting. The plot kind of lags at the end, but it still kept my interest.

This is a great audiobook listen. Kept me entertained for miles and miles. Gores captures the essence of Hammet's style while adding his own touch. The descriptions of the San Francisco Bay Area in the 20s are great and it is well plotted. Highly recommend.

Rebus to the max

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 12-13-07

A great addition to the Rebus canon, "The Naming of the Dead," is full of the usual nihilistic musings on the futility of our modern existence and refusal to give in to the expectations of others. This is at the same time a meditation on the meaning of our responsibilities to family, full of startling twists and turns. Great read by the narrator. First rate entertainment.

Good listen

This is classic John Sandford read (or listen in this case). He uses Det. Virgil Flowers as the protagonist instead of Lucas Davenport, but he has the usual interesting story with lots of bodies and a mystery to boot. Flowers makes an interesting kind of hero and the rural Minnesota ambience is well done. I enjoyed this immensely. Just the kind of thing for a long road trip.

Irritating

Total
1 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 12-07-07

This is supposed to be a police procedural. However, the author seems to know nothing about police procedure--either that or he decided to leave it out of this book. You are led to believe that the protagonist is a super sleuth, but he spends most of the book just sitting around waiting to get lucky. I listened to the whole thing, but I was mostly hoping that it would simply end.
