needed a different narrator
Revisado: 02-02-24
Super cute. Although it would have been better with a different narrator. Kate is great, but it would have been better with a Latina narrator. It kinda took me out of it some times. Story still holds up though. It is still as spicy and infuriating as it was the first time around.

Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

simply the best
Revisado: 01-01-24
Tandiwe did the best job. I cried. I'm so late to the book, but have watched the last four adaptations. The 2006 TV version is my favorite and I am so pleased it was so faithful to the book.

Historia
Fleeing a disastrous marriage, Helen Huntingdon retreats to the desolate mansion, Wildfell Hall, with her son, Arthur. There, she makes her living as a painter. Finding it difficult to avoid her neighbors, she is soon an object of speculation and gossip. Brontë portrays Helen's eloquent struggle for independence at a time when society defined a married woman as her husband's property.

Great narration. Loved the story. I saw the TV adaptation in the 90s. There was lots I didn't remember, like the ending.

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Revisado: 12-19-23
I picked this one because Matthew Goode did the narration and Horowitz is one of my favorites. I'm not a huge Bond fan. It was a solid story. Matthew did a really good job with the accents. I hope he does more.

Historia
Nearly six hundred years ago, a short, genial, cannily alert man in his late 30s took a very old manuscript off a library shelf, saw with excitement what he had discovered, and ordered that it be copied. That book was the last surviving manuscript of an ancient Roman philosophical epic by Lucretius—a beautiful poem containing the most dangerous ideas: that the universe functioned without the aid of gods, that religious fear was damaging to human life, and that matter was made up of very small particles.

not quite what I was expecting
Revisado: 09-20-23
I thought this would follow a different kind of thread through history. I'm not sure I got everything he was saying about the philosophical changes that came as a result of this work being reintroduced into the world. I did learn a lot, which is always a good thing.
