Historia
Our narrator should be happy, shouldn't she? She's young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate; she works an easy job at a hip art gallery and lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like the rest of her needs, by her inheritance. But there is a dark and vacuous hole in her heart, and it isn't just the loss of her parents, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her best friend, Reva. It's the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?

BORING!!!
Revisado: 03-24-25
This is certainly NOT the best book of the year. The story is about a young woman who considers herself supermodel beautiful, and believes this gives her the right to be absolutely vile to everyone around her and especially to her only friend in the world. Her therapist continues to give her numerous substances for her sleep issues, but doesn’t remember anything about their previous sessions.
I have suffered through many books, that just weren’t my style or genre. But with this book, I literally kept my finger on the “fast forward 30 seconds”, which I used liberally. Yet, after skipping several minutes of text, I felt like I missed nothing. Too much in-depth description of her vagina, the smell of her boyfriend’s penis, etc. Laborious pages of the many medications she takes every few minutes, that would kill a hippo. But she’s popping a handful of 20 different medications constantly, and nothing happens. I …mean… nothing. She sleeps 22 hours a day and apparently has many adventures while she’s “sleeping”, but can’t recall anything for several days at a time.
A totally unbelievable, repetitive, and not-at-all humorous story of a narcissistic, beautiful young woman.
I’m only about halfway through this book, and I don’t believe there’s any twist in the story that could make me finish.

Historia
People around the world have fallen in love with Penguin the Magpie, a global social media sensation, and her adventures with her human family. But there is far more to Penguin's story than meets the eye. It all begins when Sam, Cameron Bloom's wife, suffers a near fatal fall that leaves her paralyzed and deeply depressed. One of their three sons, reeling from the tragic accident, discovers an injured magpie chick abandoned after she had fallen from her nest. The boys name the bird Penguin, for her black-and-white plumage.

Disappointing, very abridged version of events
Revisado: 11-29-21
I watched the movie of this story with fascination and awe, of the determination and love this family had. What an amazing, heartbreaking, funny, harrowing, and triumphant story. Like many movies based on true stories, I was hungry for a more detailed account of this family's journey. This book isn't that... in fact, its the opposite. It's basically a bit of introduction, a chapter including a brief account of their life before the accident, and a condensed account of their post-accident life with barely a blurb about the bird, Penguin. Then there is a lengthy, heartfelt dedication to his wife and children, with a bit more information than the movie included, about her involvement and success with canoeing. Initially, I thought I'd mistakenly purchased an abridged version of the book, but when I looked, it's says "unabridged". Bummer.

Narrator ruins this book.
Revisado: 11-29-21
I have only listened to a couple of chapters so far. Although the stories of these women have the potential to be humorous, harrowing and fascinating ... any chance of my being captivated is out the window due to the robotic, monotone voice of the narrator. It sounds almost computer-generated, similar to what you hear on some Tik-Tok videos. I'm not sure I can actually endure listening to several more hours of this, unless my goal is to fall into a deep sleep. Very disappointing, I was actually looking forward to some empowering tales of sassy ladies. They may be in there somewhere, but not sure I'll make it! Darn.

Historia
At once profoundly personal and far-reaching, Exit Interview with My Grandmother serves as a meditation on the beginning of a young woman’s life and the series of questions that arise from examining love, loss, family, memory, and death. Moving between cities and centuries, Meyersohn probes her family's Jewish history and her grandparents' relationships in part to decipher her own young queer relationships, but also to examine how we ought to behave in the face of a world riddled with uncertainty and doubt.

Really terrible
Revisado: 05-12-20
The author's concept is brilliant and heartfelt, and could have been a really fascinating listen. She missed the opportunity to share her grandmother's experiences with her audience, instead choosing to ramble about her own lesbian relationships and her feelings and experiences with various women. I am still stymied as to how this fit in with the interview with her grandmother? The few, short soundbites of her grandmother, and the backstory of the Jewish families immigrating to America, were awesome and actually interesting. The grandmother is witty, very progressive for her age, intelligent and sweet. The author missed the mark in selling this as an interview with her grandmother. Instead, it is more of a memoir of a young, early 20's, recent college graduate, and her trip to Europe to see her current girlfriend. There was some actual meaty stuff happening in the background, that to me, was the actual story. Sorry... didnt like this at all.
