Historia
Winter lasts most of the year at the edge of the Russian wilderness, and in the long nights, Vasilisa and her siblings love to gather by the fire to listen to their nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, Vasya loves the story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon. Wise Russians fear him, for he claims unwary souls, and they honor the spirits that protect their homes from evil. Then Vasya’s widowed father brings home a new wife from Moscow. Fiercely devout, Vasya’s stepmother forbids her family from honoring their household spirits, but Vasya fears what this may bring.

Historia
From New York Times best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the American-Indian experience. Fans of Jordan Peele and Tommy Orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four American-Indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. Years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a vengeful way.

Horrifically, thoughtfully, riveting.
Revisado: 03-25-23
I picked this up on a recommendation from a trusted source, not really realizing it was a horror story. I was horrified, but I think it was worth it. In the end a beautiful story.

Complex and intricately told
Revisado: 07-31-17
Surprising, and important. I appreciated the delicate and compassionate, yet matter-of-fact way the complexities of these characters and these challenges were told.

I loved this book. The story was excellently crafted, the points of view so pure, believable. And the spoken narration was very well done also!

"trigger warning" was better
Revisado: 05-17-16
as far as a collection of sorts be Neil Gaiman, I was a little disappointed by this after "Trigger Warning" which I utterly loved. I really liked a few of the stories in here, but some I struggled to get through, and some ended up skipping after a few minutes.

From evolution to the epidural and beyond, Tina Cassidy presents an intelligent, enlightening, and impeccably researched cultural history of how and why we're born the way we are. Women have been giving birth for millennia, but that's about the only constant in the final stage of the great process that is human reproduction. Why is it that every culture and generation seems to have its own ideas about the best way to give birth?

really interesting and informative historical work. it was well researched and written, and I thought also it did especially well at being non-biased regarding birth choices and care providers, when all was said and done.
