Historia
“Lydia is dead. But they don’t know this yet.” So begins this exquisite novel about a Chinese American family living in 1970s small-town Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee, and her parents are determined that she will fulfill the dreams they were unable to pursue. But when Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, the delicate balancing act that has been keeping the Lee family together is destroyed, tumbling them into chaos.

Depressing
Revisado: 01-27-25
Not one happy moment in this book. Beautifully written and an interesting family study, but was not enjoyable. Probably very realistic image of racism, family favoritism, parents projecting own dreams onto kids, etc. Narrator made it sound like a sappy romance novel.

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ("It's a piece of cake! Just do four hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!") I have decided to tell these stories just as I have always done, in my own voice.

I wasn't really a hugeDave Grohl fan, but now I am! He's funny, humble, passionate, and intelligent. He's a rock star who adores his family. He marvels at and appreciates his own success. Way to go, Dave!! You truly are a storyteller. Thanks for sharing!!!

I really tried to like this book, hoping it would get better but it never did. I did not become attached to a single character and overall struggled to retain interest. Julia Whelan is awesome as always.

Narrator is over the top outstanding. Always in character with lots of different voices and accents. Great overall book. Loved that there's very little sappy romance. Just likable people (for the most part) stumbling through life.b

Characters are lovable, story is endearing and beautiful, writing is spot-on, and narration is outstanding. I learned so much about ASL and how deaf/blind people communicate. Blair Fell is a very talented author and narrator. Best book I've heard in a while.

Historia
Caroline Murphy swore she'd never set foot back in the small Southern town of Peachtree Bluff; she was a New York girl born and bred and the worst day of her life was when, in the wake of her father's death, her mother selfishly forced her to move - during her senior year of high school, no less - back to that hick-infested rat trap where she'd spent her childhood summers.

There was too much sappy eye-roll romance in this for me. The narration for Caroline sounded like reading, not entertaining. I loved the mom and sisters theme, but just didn't grab me. I didn't really feel close the characters. Caroline and James are spoiled, snooty, and ridiculous.
