Needs to be finished
Revisado: 11-05-23
I gave high marks because I was rapt every second. But when it ended so abruptly I thought perhaps I hadn’t downloaded the entire story. Now, looking at the reviews, it seems we all need a satisfying ending.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Best Book I’ve listened to in 15 years
Revisado: 01-12-23
This book might be Kingsolver’s best. She gets the voice of rural poor Virginia just right(as far as I know). The reader’s voice really brings Demon to life. As a personal narrative of a boy down on his luck it rivals anything Dickens did. Characters are complex, dialog has a poetry I’ve rarely heard in good fiction.
It’s long and I wish it had never ended. Looking for more from this reader now.
Possible spoiler:
We’ve all read about the opioid crisis and seen the movies but this, THIS book really allows us to understand it in a visceral way. By the time opioids come to dominate the storyline the listener is intimately enmeshed in this world and completely invested in each character’s life. Found myself talking to the book and truly emotionally involved

Charming & Light
Revisado: 09-22-21
This morsel kept me company on a long bike ride. The reader gives his story real life. I often download free audio books and end up abandoning them but this I are up in one sitting. It had a nostalgia about it yet there were plenty of humorous moments.
Highly recommend

Historia
After a long and eventful life, Allan Karlsson ends up in a nursing home, believing it to be his last stop. The only problem is that he's still in good health, and in one day, he turns 100. A big celebration is in the works, but Allan really isn't interested (and he'd like a bit more control over his vodka consumption). So he decides to escape. He climbs out the window in his slippers and embarks on a hilarious and entirely unexpected journey, involving, among other surprises, a suitcase stuffed with cash.

Great reader, ripping good yarn
Revisado: 07-23-21
I never write reviews and this book already has so many but I laughed so much I’m compelled to share. There’s basically 2 books in one. Either story stands on its own but together they lend to the absurdity and humor. Every other chapter follows our protagonist on his escape from his nursing home and the other chapters follow his colorful life. There’s definitely a Forrest Gumpian vibe but it is still fun. If you have vodka to enjoy all the better (you’ll see)
The reader does an amazing job evoking the disparate personalities…even the famous ones.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Great tale. Told well
Revisado: 04-06-20
I got this book after enjoying Mandel’s Station Eleven, which was recommended as relevant during Covid-19 lockdown. The Glass Hotel is even better. Love the characters’ details, Mandel captures the essence of class divide well. Moore’s voice is great. Going to search other books she narrated.
