Why isn't Fanny Price on the Cover?

Excellent story, well read. I am perplexed over the floozy on the cover. She most definitely does not represent Fanny Price and her bare shoulders are not period costume. Who picks these covers?

Excellent story. Mediocre performance of varying loudness. The cover photo certainly does not look like Rose and was obviously chosen by someone who has never read the story. Louisa May Alcott is rolling in her grave.

Probably a good story, but narration was bad

The narration was intolerable. The narrator must have been turning his head away from the microphone, because the sound would drift off, then suddenly become very loud. I'll just have to read it instead of listen to it. I can't comment on the story until then.

Audible Should Warn About Filthy Language

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

People who enjoy filthy language might like it.

What was most disappointing about Sophie Kinsella’s story?

Frequent use of the F word. I don't like headphones, so I really don't appreciate it when a book contains filthy words that might be overheard by others in my home or by my neighbors if I am working outside. There are plenty of tamer slang words that could have been used.

Have you listened to any of Rosalyn Landor’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No.

What character would you cut from The Undomestic Goddess?

All the ones with filthy mouths.

Any additional comments?

Between the slow start and nasty language, I don't think I will finish it. The narrator did a nice job.

Where does The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It ranks high in performance. The different readers helped me keep track of the story, but the epistolary style used ranks low. The whole book was a series of letters which I thought made the story line choppy. There were a lot of funny comments and turns of phrase, which, along with the characters, kept me listening.

Has The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society turned you off from other books in this genre?

Absolutely yes! The epistolary style, especially in an audio book, was difficult to follow. The different voices helped, but it was a chore to listen to.

Which scene was your favorite?

I loved it when the sneaky reporter who stole the letters got caught and tossed in an out building. Also the boy who hung out in the shadows by the brothel and pranked the soldiers coming out.

Who was the most memorable character of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and why?

Elizabeth because she is the one everyone talked about. All of the characters were excellent and I thought they were the strong point of the story.

Any additional comments?

It was well researched. I think a normal narrative style with occasional use of letters would have made it more interesting.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Anyone who enjoys being rampantly exploited, without further ado, should buy this boxed set.

What was most disappointing about Michele Gilbert’s story?

She has very little to say. Then at the end she wastes more time saying "thanks for downloading my book" and a bunch of legal rigamarole. It took her 20 minutes to get around to talking about what Kabbalah is. She gave a long, unhelpful introduction about most Jews not liking it. She tells you what she's going to tell you, tells you again and again, then finally gives a brief outline of the Kabbalah tree. Then at the end she wastes more time saying "thanks for downloading my book" and a bunch of legal rigamarole. She uses the same modus operandi for Tarot. There is more information on both topics available on Wikipedia.

What didn’t you like about Laura Witten’s performance?

She mispronounced "Torah" and other words. She talked way, way too fast, without the slightest pause between points.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I've been had. The four and five star reviews were done by astroturfing catfishers or catfishing astroturfers. Caveat emptor!

Any additional comments?

Overpriced. She should have paid me to listen. She also needs to review English grammar. She should write a book on how to succeed as a charlatan.

Would you try another book from Harper Lee and/or Reese Witherspoon?

Yes, I'd read another book by Harper Lee, but that's not going to happen. I didn't particularly care for Reese Witherspoon's performance, but I wouldn't turn down a book if she was the only option.

If you’ve listened to books by Harper Lee before, how does this one compare?

An unpolished novel not intended for publication cannot begin to compare to "To Kill a Mockingbird". However, I think GSAW portrays the South in the 1950s facing Civil Rights in a way that rings more true than "To Kill a Mocking Bird". GSAW helped me see the southern point of view. I don't agree with it, but I understand better where southerners at the time were coming from. In my most recent reading of TKAM, I wondered how Atticus Finch could have been the way he was, (i.e., willing to fairly represent a black man unjustly accused) given his family and cultural background. GSAW rounds out his character and is more believable. While I think his racist beliefs are deplorable, I also think they are being taken out of context and over-sensationalized.

Did Reese Witherspoon do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

She was okay.

Did Go Set a Watchman inspire you to do anything?

It inspired me to send a contribution to the NAACP.

Any additional comments?

It was way over-priced.
