After I’ve read the whole Alex Rider series, I hunted for a new teen spy series to get lost in. I pretty quickly stumbled upon the Jason Steed series. This is my second book in the series, obviously :)

If you’re in the same boat as me, here’s what I’ve got, comparing the two series:
- Alex Rider series is written better. The interaction between the characters are more believable. But the story is more repetitive, following a set recipe.
- Jason Steed series is a bit clumsy in the way that certain things are explained, making it unrealistic and unbelievable. Like, it makes me think that Cooper is a bit out of touch with teenagers and interaction between others and teenagers. Anyways, not the end of the world, and certainly didn’t prevent more from listening to the end.
- I like Jason Steed’s storylines. They are certainly less predictable than Alex Rider series. I thought the story was drawing to an end 1/3 of a way through (not keep track of the progress or total num of chapters) and was thrown in for a loop several times! It’s fast-paced. The action sequence is pretty good.
- No gadgets in Jason Steed story. We have guns. The actions and consequences are quite serious.
- Jason Steed storyline is longer, with more complexity, I felt that everything wasn’t wrapped up in a neat bow at the end (unlike Alex Rider series for the most parts) There were still some loose ends and unanswered questions.

I would recommend this book and the series itself if you like action-packed “spy” teen novels. I wouldn’t take the story too seriously though. It’s an easy read.

First, let me just say that I love audiobooks. I have listened to many books before.

"The Andromeda Strain" is probably better read physically than listened. There were a lot of meaningless numbers being read (mind-numbingly boring and so slow!!) and jargons/filler words that don't really do anything towards moving the story along other than making whatever it is seem more "authentic" and serious.

I love the idea of this story and I could see why a lot of people liked the book. I just found it really anticlimactic. The story was too slow and too one-note (until the last two chapters or so) for such a rich subject matter. I guess it's trying to focus on the journey of these scientists while they search for answers instead of the actual possible ramifications of the virus. The readers are in the scientists' head for most of the book, which means that you're hearing about a lot of interesting scientific facts about biology and infectious diseases-- I enjoyed it at the beginning, but found that this aspect of the book dragged on and on and on. I didn't have the patience for it at the time I listened to this book. It is just so much harder to concentrate on hard scientific facts when you're listening. I think I would have enjoyed the book more if I had read it. And not about to go to sleep.

The narrator did a good job overall in adopting different voices and intonation for different characters.

Any additional comments?

I love this series so much! I just finished the second book and now working on the third one.

Emily Gray is very good at switching characters. Her voice is almost always distinct with each character she does.

I'm sure that ya'll have read other reviews of this book; the loooonnnnggg pauses are *real*. It's not just the end of paragraphs or the end of chapters, it's also even at the middle of paragraphs. It is noticeable when you are really into the story and your concentration is cut off with these horrible pauses. It's just terrible, terrible editing.

But then again, I love this story. My annoyance must be sacrificed. Audiobooks are a necessity when you have long commutes.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes the steampunk genre, werewolves, vampires, Victorian era, etc. The book is very well written and witty. (A bit *too* witty and silly at the most inopportune time). The world in it is vibrant and addictive. I don't know what I'd do when the series end. :)
