Informative view of inner-city life, but not great

The information was informative, but the narrator was distracting. He would annunciate the wrong words, sound cheery while narrating sad and traumatic content, and sound sad when narrating hopeful content. The information was exceptionally left-leaning. I am very left-leaning, but I hoped for a more balanced view. I feel for those children, though. We need to do something to help inner-city youth.

Initially, I was a bit put off by so much negativity and rage, especially in adolescence. But then, hearing three intertwined stories from three narrators helped me fall in love with this book. I couldn't stop listening to it. It is a beautiful mix of generations, religions, cultures, and stories we can all relate to.

It took a while for me to get into this book, but once I did, I was hooked. As a mother, I am stunned and saddened by what Tanya and the young girls had to bear. I am horrified by the level of corruption and ineptitude found in that judicial system. Still, I’m hopeful due to the strength of Tanya and her parents and her team. This was an awesome book.

Minka Kelly's story is tragic, and she narrates it in a way that helps the reader go there with her. She weaves a lifetime of loss, neglect, abuse, triumph, and perseverance together in a beautiful way. Her writing and narration are award-worthy.

The first half of the book is a bit dry. The author/narrator doesn't develop enough basis to understand why she fell into addiction, and the storyline about professional skating is relatively dull. Her prison accounts were telling and insightful, and I feel terribly for what she and other women endure. I didn't enjoy the audiobook because Keri's voice is extremely monotone and dry. I wish she did a bit of training before narrating her book.

Viola Davis is captivating, and so is his story. She has been through unimaginable and recurring trauma and she tackles every type of issue in this book, ranging from sexual and physical abuse to colorism, Hollywood, femininity, and more. She should win an award for this book and her narration.
