Great companion learning guide
Revisado: 12-06-22
There are several advantages to an Audible program like this, and it's especially clear with a course in German for English speakers. First and perhaps foremost, I learned that German sounds almost exactly like English with an accent. I honestly don't know if I would have made the same connection if I were looking at written words instead of listening to them spoken. Paul Noble's explanation of how to get German words from English ones also makes it easy to expand vocabulary on your own, at least to some extent. Es ist fantastish, and very different from what I get out of other learning aids.
I will say, while this class has helped me make huge strides in my spoken German, I have absolutely no idea how to spell most of what I know how to say, so other learning aids are required to round out my education. That said, even when I go to places like Duolingo or an Audible set of short stories with an accompanying PDF, what I've learned in this course has helped a ton. So, thank you, Paul!
The only thing I would like even better would have been this: in the scenarios, instead of having me translate both sides of a conversation from English to German, it would help my listening comprehension if I had to translate back what someone else says from German to English.

Historia
An angel called Arcade leaves heaven for earth, where, using his invisibility, he steals books from a library with the purpose of studying. He ultimately joins several other fallen angels with a plan now to overthrow God, in their eyes an incapable and ill-informed and thus impossible creator...The great author's knowledge of history and religious texts is brilliantly conveyed, pairing extremely well with his cynical philosophy and the virtuosity in his descriptive prose.

It's very...early-20th Century French, alright.
Revisado: 11-14-22
And with all the vicissitudes of the writing style of the time.
Buried amongst the story are gems of insight, some about the perspective of the world at the time, some an alternative perspective on God and Christianity, some of which is certainly still applicable today. This is one of those books I would get very lost struggling to read on my own, so I'm grateful I was able to listen to it.
That said, in agreement with many of the other reviewers, the narrator is very...academic. You will hear all the words clearly, but you will never hear the characters' voices, tone, or inflection. You'll have to imagine that.
Overall, I'm glad I read it, but someone looking for a summary of the hidden gems could seek the Cliff Notes or, based on the chapter titles (you have to listen to the opening of each chapter to get the titles, which are really more like chapter descriptions, which is helpful), listen to key chapters such as those of the Gardener's story, Arcadi's first appearance, and the final chapter.
I did think the book ended very abruptly, and had a lot of lead up for such an abrupt ending. I also couldn't fail to be upset by the assertion that women and God's angels were just made in such a way that God's angels just wouldn't be able to help themselves around women, such is the nature of the world. Other than that it was just...again, very early-20th Century French.
PS, there are only 35 chapters.

Without even realizing it, we all use the fruits of political philosophy. From liberty to democracy to community, the terms and concepts originated by political philosophers are ingrained in our global consciousness. Yet many of us have an incomplete picture of how these ideas developed and, quite possibly, a skewed perception of their intentions and implications. This highly relevant course sheds light on the labyrinth of Western political and social theory, as well as its influence on modern history.

I learned so much from this! I immediately want to listen again and take notes the second time. So many things make more sense now, and it's very encouraging to know that I'm not alone in some of the ideas I've thought of on my own. Thank you to Lawrence Cahoon and The Great Courses for this course.

Historia
During the 20th century, America managed to make its economic and social systems both more and more fair and more and more prosperous. A huge, secure, and contented middle class emerged. All boats rose together. But then the New Deal gave way to the Raw Deal. Beginning in the early 1970s, by means of a long war conceived of and executed by a confederacy of big business CEOs, the superrich, and right-wing zealots, the rules and norms that made the American middle class possible were undermined and dismantled.

Immediately want to read again.
Revisado: 04-27-22
I have the print copy of this book, as well. I want to share that it includes a 14-page bibliography of about 300 sources! This book is so well done, I immediately want to read it again to absorb more. The author is transparent about his influences and feelings, but I think is fair to both Republicans and Democrats, and to both the average voters versus those elected and those in their circles. I've read several other books trying to explain how we got where we are today and none have been as comprehensive. I feel like I finally have the full picture. I recommend this book to anyone else who wants to understand.

Historia
When we think about the future of war, the military and Washington and most everyone gets it backwards. We think in terms of buying single military systems, such as fighter jets or aircraft carriers. And when we think about modernizing those systems, we think about buying better versions of the same things. But what really matters is not the single system but "the battle network"—the collection of sensors and shooters that enables a military to find an enemy system, target it, and attack it.

Powerful, unique perspective. Worth the listen.
Revisado: 04-26-22
I've never read another book like this, talking about this subject from this perspective. It is well-researched and each point is meticulously supported. I think people who don't need convincing of the message may find it long-winded, but that isn't a reason not to listen to the author's first-hand experience in the Defense-Industrial-Congressional Complex.

Revisado: 12-31-21
I didn't know Meghan McCain before I heard about her book, I was just a fan of her dad's. I am so glad I listened to this book. I believe she not only stands up for women, she stands up for "real" Republicans all over, and perhaps even more so for moderates (though I don't know if that was her goal). I cried at least half a dozen times listening to this book, hearing about her experiences, some of which would have crippled me. I have so much respect for her, and she gives me hope for our future.

Historia
Ian Millhiser, Vox's Supreme Court correspondent, tells the story of what the six very conservative Republicans Supreme Court justices are likely to do with their power. The Agenda exposes a radically altered Supreme Court whose powers extend far beyond transforming any individual right - its agenda is to shape the very nature of America's government, redefining who gets to have legal rights, who is beyond the reach of the law, and who chooses the people who make our laws.

It isn't about the politics.
Revisado: 10-22-21
Most importantly, this book explains how the Supreme Court seems to be reversing precedent in a way that favors one political party. This is not strictly about politics. I disagree with the author on some points where he discusses the merit or vileness of specific decisions that align with or contradict specific values of the major parties, but overall I am persuaded by the fact that these decisions are not even-handed. Recent decisions are inconsistent with past decisions, and even internally inconsistent in some cases, and there is a pattern that clearly favors one party. What is most worrying about this favor is not just what values are espoused, but in where power is concentrated. This makes the information in this book extremely valuable, in pointing to what types of cases to watch, even if they aren't the highest profile.

Throughout history, humans have been driven by the quest for two cherished ideals: community and freedom. The two don’t coexist easily. We value individuality and self-reliance, yet are utterly dependent on community for our most basic needs. In this intricately crafted and thought-provoking book, Sebastian Junger examines the tension that lies at the heart of what it means to be human.

A different look. Read if you value "freedom."
Revisado: 09-12-21
This is a well-written travel log that surfaces one of the most important philosophical questions people never seem to ask: what exactly *is* freedom? And, freedom from what? Because, as the author explores, one form of oppression is usually just traded for another. What is important to you? I like this book. For as succinct and poignant as it is, I think everyone who says they value "freedom" should read it.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

A little pushy
Revisado: 12-19-19
I love Malcolm Gladwell books, but this one didn't land with me. My impression was that it was good research strung together with a lot of opinion, rather than letting the facts speak for themselves. I can tell he is passionate about the subject, but he comes off pushy that the reader come to the same conclusions he did.
The evidence presented is also all over the map, and I struggled throughout the book to see how it was all related. It was, but the organization just wasn't there for the user to follow. The conclusion also seemed to go on forever, again reflecting poor organization of the book.
I agree that the points in this book are important, and I completely agree that talking to strangers is complicated and these other factors need to be taken into account. I learned a few things, too, and a lot of segments of the book are fascinating and well-wriiten, but they never came together in a way that let me take away any overarching point.
