Historia
A mesmerizing narrative about the rise and fall of an unlikely international crime boss. Based on hundreds of interviews, Patrick Radden Keefe's sweeping narrative tells the story not only of Sister Ping, but of the gangland gunslingers who worked for her, the immigration and law enforcement officials who pursued her, and the generation of penniless immigrants who risked death and braved a 17,000 mile odyssey so that they could realize their own version of the American dream.

pretty good

This is an interesting book. Even a true story has characters, I listened to both the book about the IRA and the book about the Sackler family before this one and the latter two give you a better sense of the people involved. Better character development. Also, this one is worlds better than Chatter. Not that Chatter is bad. it isn't. I just wanted to be able to recommend it to a paranoid friend of mine as an introduction to how to find good information, but it reads like a love letter to a thesaurus and it will put anyone who isnt in love with language for its own sake off. The author is getting better at organizing the story and giving the reader some points of view to follow, That's where this one is lacking, the point of view.

The prize-winning and best-selling author of Say Nothing presents a grand, devastating portrait of three generations of the Sackler family, famed for their philanthropy, whose fortune was built by Valium and whose reputation was destroyed by OxyContin. Empire of Pain is a masterpiece of narrative reporting and writing, exhaustively documented and ferociously compelling.

excellent narration of an excellent book
Revisado: 05-07-21
It is my default position that authors should leave narrating to actors. Neil Gaiman does alright but really, they make actors for a reason.
This guy does well. If I wanted to be critical, maybe he gets a TINGE snarky. But I keep listening to this when I am at work because its a good story told in an engaging way with a solid performance and a clear deep voice. Patrick if u are reading this you could probably do fiction if you wanted to, certainly histories
John Oliver recommended this on TV and he was right. I have all 4 books by this author now, one left to listen to He does good work.
Thank you kindly.

I almost didnt get this because of the bad reviews and uselessly short sample.I think all these negative reviews are downright crazy. I am a few hours in and totally engrossed. The performance is excellent.

while characters over a series are expected to grow and change this installment is not true to their essential nature. Lisbeth is not Lisbeth in this story and there is not much of her. And the incompetent prison warden is REDICULOUS. Simon Vance is always perfect. We love you Simon!

story so strong it survives the terrible reading
Revisado: 06-29-17
its good historical fiction. Its mostly politics and social history, but told in a totally human way so that you can be transported to the space and imagine the real lives of actual people. I dont know how accurate it is - I come to this with no knowledge of this period in france.
The story is engaging and well written .. its not a romance novel. The reading however is one of the worst I have even been able to endure. Any scene that involves any action or emotion is delivered in a shrill and shreaking tone that is very off-putting. Its completely over -acted as though the reader thinks words do not carry meaning all on their own and must be punched out all dripping with inflection or that no one ever expressed anger without becoming completely unhinged.
Its a shame. A skillful performance with a penny's worth of subtlety would have made this one of the best stories I have ever heard.

BEST FANTASY FICTION EVER
Revisado: 12-09-16
This story and the two that follow are among the finest stories ever told. When I first joined audible 13 years ago I requested this many times. I wrote emails, I sent letters, I researched rights holders. Eventually they wore me down and I gave up. But look! Here it is. I can't write anymore, I need to go visit the cave. Thanks to whoever released this .

Our guide to the life of the Bard is an actor called Pickleherring, who asserts that as a boy he was an original member of Shakespeare's acting troupe. In an attic above a brothel in Restoration London - a half century after Shakespeare has departed the stage - Pickleherring, now an old man, sits down to write the full story of his former friend, mentor, and master. Fond, faithful Pickleherring has forgotten nothing over the years, and using sources both firsthand and far-fetched he means to set the record straight.

why drag Shakespeare into this mess?
Revisado: 03-05-15
I thought I was buying a work of historical fiction that would humanize Shakespeare and have him as the main character in the story. What I got was an old guy's internal monolog concerning the problems of having a penis and daydreaming about improbable lesbian sex. I wonder why that wasn't what I expected?
Some of the stories might have been cute/ funny if they were told in the manner of a friend relaying an embarrassing moment, but the "story" doesn't go like that.
Actor was very good, will look for other works narrated by Mr Malcolm

The year is 1327. Franciscans in a wealthy Italian abbey are suspected of heresy, and Brother William of Baskerville arrives to investigate. But his delicate mission is suddenly overshadowed by seven bizarre deaths that take place in seven days and nights of apocalyptic terror. Brother William turns detective, and a uniquely deft one at that. His tools are the logic of Aristotle, the theology of Aquinas, the empirical insights of Roger Bacon-- all sharpened to a glistening edge by his wry humor and ferocious curiosity.

after 12 hours of what can be summarized as " women are evil, but I really like sex, but women are evil blah blah blah. I gave up. I am baffled to my bones how anyone anywhere could like this insane rambling drivel. Curious, I watched the trailer for the movie. Then I watched the movie with Sean Connery and Christian Slater. Movie was pretty good. Maybe about 5 minutes of woman hate in the movie.... medieval monks ... cant be helped ... there really is a murder mystery - save yourself 19 hours of crap and watch the 2 hours worth of plot in the movie

Months after the Waterless Flood pandemic has wiped out most of humanity, Toby and Ren have rescued their friend Amanda from the vicious Painballers. They return to the MaddAddamite cob house, newly fortified against man and giant pigoon alike. Accompanying them are the Crakers, the gentle, quasi-human species engineered by the brilliant but deceased Crake. Their reluctant prophet, Snowman-the-Jimmy, is recovering from a debilitating fever, so it's left to Toby to preach the Craker theology, with Crake as Creator.

I liked it - I skipped from Oryx and Crake to this
Revisado: 09-01-14
I am glad I read reviews. I would have been mad to read the year of the flood and find no Snowman and no Jimmy. There isn't much of him here, but there is enough, almost. And its a good story. Maybe its not AS good. But neither is it as sad. I don't know if I will listen to the year of the flood or not. I was not as engaged with these characters as I was with Oryx and Crake cast, except for 2 that aren't in the flood at all.

From the publishers that brought you A Game of Thrones comes the series that inspired George R.R. Martin’s epic work. France became a great nation under Philip the Fair - but it was a greatness achieved at the expense of her people, for his was a reign characterised by violence, the scandalous adulteries of his daughters-in-law, and the triumph of royal authority.

was not translated by a native english speaker
Revisado: 09-01-14
I couldn't get into it. The language is terrible. This work was translated by a native French speaker with high test scores in conversational English. A street vendor in Paris would sell crepes, not pancakes. Even if I could let the pancakes slide, neither pancake nor crepe is made with paste. Its batter people. Its batter.
They should have given this work to a native speaker of English for the American market, to translate it into a work that flows with a story- teller voice . This doesn't have any kind of voice. Its bad.
