Historia
This book is one of a series. It discusses some of the wacky ways that Mormons avoid answering tough questions about their doctrine, beliefs, and history which were written by their own historians, prophets, and leaders that is completely baloney. It exposes what they really believe and the massive hypocrisy found in almost every Mormon, everywhere. You will find yourself laughing out loud more than once.

What is Levi Freud smoking?
Revisado: 05-01-23
I listened to this "audible pamphlet" in hopes of finding a humorous or possibly insightful nugget of information about members of the LDS Church. Unfortunately, all there is in this 16-minute book is innuendo and false claims about Mormon responses to fundamental historical and theological questions. I grew up in Utah with a Catholic father and a Mormon mother. I never heard a single response from a Church member even remotely similar to what Mr. Freud claims to have received. But don't take my word for it, ask any one of these questions to a member of the LDS Church. You will find that Levi must be disingenuous or simply delusional.

Historia
It's February, 1852, and all around Chicago, Maggie sees postings soliciting "eligible women" to travel to the gold mines of Goosetown. A young seamstress with a small daughter, she has nothing to lose. She joins 43 other women and two pious reverends on the dangerous 2,000-mile journey west. None are prepared for the hardships they face on the trek or for the strengths they didn't know they possessed. Maggie discovers she’s not the only one looking to leave dark secrets behind.

Like Seltzer Water that is Left Out Too Long
Revisado: 08-14-22
The story-line for this novel had great potential. The idea of a pioneer-era wagon train full of single women had me intrigued from the start. Think of all the plots, sub-plots and plot twists that could be possible if J.K. Rowling, Dan Brown or even Mark Twain were to pen such a story. Unfortunately Sandra Dallas is no J.K. Rowling. I found the plot twists to be so highly predictable that every time I finished a chapter, I debated with myself whether I should continue reading on to the next one. The main characters never seemed to develop personalities that made them seem real. And the supporting characters were even more one-dimensional; the characterization of Native Americans and Mormons were so predictably stereotypical that I found myself laughing at the infantile development of such characters. For example, how would Mormon men react to a group of single women who entered the "Great Salt Lake Valley"? They would of course try to make them polygamist wives, right? Except that real LDS pioneer men would never have attempted such a thing; they were interested in prospective wives of their faith, not available wives of NO faith. All-in-all, the novel was mildly entertaining, so I'll give it 3-stars. One last gripe: How can Angela Dawe call herself a narrator when she has no ability to imitate a man's voice? The narrator's attempts to say men's lines in the novel were embarrassingly unconvincing, and even slightly irritating to this listener.

On June 5, 2002, 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart, the daughter of a close-knit Mormon family, was taken from her home in the middle of the night by religious fanatic, Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. She was kept chained, dressed in disguise, repeatedly raped, and told she and her family would be killed if she tried to escape. After her rescue on March 12, 2003, she rejoined her family and worked to pick up the pieces of her life.

Compelling & Heartwrenching
Revisado: 10-20-13
What did you love best about My Story?
The strength of character that Elizabeth continually exhibits throughout her ordeal, and even afterwards with her willingness to tell all the heartwrenching details of her captivity and abuse. Ms. Smart defines the concept of being victimized, but courageously refusing to remain a perpetual victim.
What did you like best about this story?
That the story was narrated by the Ms. Smart, making it first-person autobiographical.
What does Elizabeth Smart bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
In the first few pages, the listener gets the feeling that Ms. Smart is attempting to keep emotional distance from the story, reading the words somewhat dispassionately and with a narrator's detached cadence. But she can't seem to remain detached for long, because of course, this is her ordeal she is relating to the listener. When she finally decides to dispense with the emotional wall, and become passionately intertwined with the story that she is telling, the narration greatly improves and Her Story becomes "captivating" to the listener.
Any additional comments?
The book is extremely well written, but I still recommend you don't miss the opportunity to hear this story right out of the mouth of Elizabeth Smart.
