Historia
New York, 1960: For Benny Lament, music is his entire life. With his father’s deep ties to the mob, the Bronx piano man has learned that love and family can get you in trouble. So he keeps to himself, writing songs for other musicians, avoiding the spotlight…until the night his father brings him to see Esther Mine sing. Esther is a petite powerhouse with a gorgeous voice. And when Benny writes a hit song and performs it with her, their collaboration thrusts the duo onto the national stage…and stirs up old issues and new scrutiny that the mob--and Benny--would rather avoid.

Historia
Transformative and breathtakingly honest, The American Queen is based on actual events that occurred between 1865 - 1889 and shares the unsung history of a Black woman who built a kingdom in Appalachia as a refuge for the courageous people who dared to dream of a different way of life. Over the twenty-four years she was enslaved on the Montgomery Plantation, Louella learned to feel one thing: hate. Hate for the man who sold her mother. Hate for the overseer who left her daddy to hang from a noose. Hate so powerful there's no room in her heart for love.

I love the premise of the story. The narrator was wonderful. The authors note at the end of the story was incredible. I wish I could listen to it before I listened to the book.

Life is calm and fairly predictable. Until something unthinkable happens in our sleepy backwater. A crime, but not like anything I've ever seen before. It's a complete mystery. And it's up to me to solve it.

This audiobook was very well done. The story was very light and an easy listen. It’s amazing Colleen Hoover can write so many different styles of books. I would almost consider this a young adult.

Revisado: 03-12-17
I bought this book as a daily deal. The reviews were good but I wasn't really sure what the book was going to be about. Boy was I surprised. It was such an interesting book, but the narrator made you feel as if you were living with the characters. He did an incredible job capturing the personality of each character. The story was very interesting and the author did a great job moving the story forward with just the right twists and turns along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this book and the narrator.

Loved this book!
Revisado: 07-05-14
Would you consider the audio edition of The Halo Effect to be better than the print version?
I loved the audio version because of the excellent actors that read the book.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes, I couldn't wait to return to listen. The author did a great job keeping the story advancing and the pace was perfect.
Have you listened to any of Phil Gigante and Natalie Ross ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, I believe this is a first time for me.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The whole book moved me
Any additional comments?
I have read "The Book of Lost Fragrance" and "Seduction". I can't wait to listen to her new book, which I just purchased.
