Historia
Sergeant Gastovsky—Gas to everyone but his superior officers—never wanted to be a soldier. Far from it. But when a con goes wrong and he needs a place to lay low for a while, he finds himself wearing the power armor of the augmented infantry. After three years on a six-year contract, Gas has found his groove running low-level cons and various illegal activities that make him good money on the side. He’s the guy who can get you what you need. But he’s always had his eye out for a big score—the one that might set him up for life after the military.

Great writing, good story
Revisado: 05-02-22
The beginning waned a bit, the middle dragged, the final 1/3rd rushed past in a blur of great action and excitement. Wished the book would have more fun at the beginning but as with most world-building books, the start takes time to make the finish exciting.

It's a bittersweet moment of triumph, however, muted by his wife's terror over his accepting the prize. The day of the launch, Kip tries to reconcile his wife's and daughters' fears and even tries calling his estranged son, to no avail. He sets off, vowing to make amends upon his return. But a successful launch quickly morphs.

Dated but still good
Revisado: 08-16-18
This book is over 10yrs old at this writing and it still is a good book. Granted we don't have pagers or flip cell-phones but the main plot of space tourism is still pointant today. The book keeps us moving from problem to problem without getting too detailed. The ending seems a bit too rushed with the main characters and although I had hoped to see a sequel to Orbit, it has not yet happened.
Enjoy the book even later years. -RJ

Really could have been better
Revisado: 08-16-18
I'm in since the beginning and this book could have been much better. The last two chapters tried hard to redeem the previous book of lost narratives, rehashed prior plots and spiralling downplay of the main protagonists.
There were plenty of opportunities passed by in gaining allies and material support. There were equipment acquisitions that didn't make sense like gaining a small fighter instead of a capital ship.
It is my hope that we get some distance from endless talk and restart actions like retaking the Pentarus Cluster, realigning with EDF, and possibly letting all know the romance between Nash and Scott is not a bromance all the time.
There still could be some redeeming from this book but I see several books of effort to unbury the open ended plot failures created herein. IMHO.

The Galahad, a faster-than-light spacecraft, carries 50 scientists and engineers on a mission to prepare Kepler 452b, Earth's nearest habitable neighbor at 1400 light years away. With Earth no longer habitable and the Mars colony slowly failing, they are humanity's best hope. After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. Slow begging, good middle
Revisado: 03-29-18
The story starts slow setting up the plot. The long middle getting the protagonist able to deal with other characters is a problem. Seldom does the author allow more than 3 characters interaction at a time. This is a lonely adventure trying to be intellectually romantic. I hope you find it as satisfying as the author strives for it to be.
Bray. His voice work led me to this piece. I’m glad for this comfortable storytelling.

Historia
United Nations Special Operations Command sent an elite expeditionary force of soldiers and pilots out on a simple recon mission, and somehow along the way they sparked an alien civil war. Now the not-at-all-merry band of pirates is in desperate trouble, again. Their stolen alien starship is falling apart, thousands of light years from home. The ancient alien AI they nicknamed Skippy is apparently dead, and even if they can by some miracle revive him, he might never be the same.

RC Bray is Awesome!
Revisado: 02-21-18
Having partially read the book while waiting for this audio performance, it is simply amazing how much talent the reader, RC Bray & his acting talent brings to Alanson’s epic. The story starts slowly for almost 1/3, meandering until the plot finally crystallizes giving forward motion. We got to develop some minor characters while giving some rest to Skippy/Joe Bishop/Hans Chotek stooges. At the 1/2 way point, I did wonder if this was the last of the series due to plot fatigue. Alanson drank copious amounts of plot vitamins and rescued this book and series. Can’t wait until Ep:6.
Again RC Bray is A-Mazing!!
Oh, and if Craig is reading this, loved the island joke.

CW really has his main characters moving well. I'd like to see minor character growth as well as antagonist growth.

I felt compelled to write this review
Revisado: 09-04-16
I'm not a consistent reviewer so know this is about the 10th review I've ever submitted.
Being the second book in the series, readers should be familiar with the he world CW Lamb has created. Our Protagonist seems comfortable with his command, never doubting the idea he is leading the known world. His amorous encounters of the first book are softened and I believe much better than in Alice (book 1). We start to see the parental Jake more than the prom-date-Jake.
As for his leadership style, I'm comfortable with his command structure but somewhat disappointed with the Alices. They seem to be great helpers running bots and whatnot but seem to scheme almost as much as the doting girlfriends.
For the writer, CW enjoys holding a bit back from the reader so they are somewhat surprised when a plan finishes in Jake's favor. He needs to spend more time redeeming Sarah (which I hope happens in Book 3).
To the Narrator, Mr Drummond, I like him. He's managing about 40 voices including 9 different but identical AIs. Yes, he has a challenge with most of the voices being female but it is not a distraction to my ears. I'm generally aware of who is speaking by Mr Drummond's acting. For me, if I don't hear Mr Drummond but instead am immersed in the story, the narrator is good. Mr Drummond fully succeeds on this. Bravo to his performance.
I hope readers enjoy this book as much as I have and give it a good listen. Looking forward to book 3. -RJ

Historia
Neal Stephenson, "the hottest science fiction writer in America", takes science fiction to dazzling new levels. The Diamond Age is a stunning tale; set in 21st-century Shanghai, it is the story of what happens what a state-of-the-art interactive device falls into the hands of a street urchin named Nell. Her life, and the entire future of humanity, is about to be decoded and reprogrammed.

One of my absoute favorites
Revisado: 07-12-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This book starts off like all NS books a bit difficult to digest the story and vernacular. Before long you're attached to Nel while championing her causes.
What did you like best about this story?
Watching the primer bring Nel from the lowest of thete society to the princess of the planet. She is easy to like at every stage of the book. I also love the antagonists, Dr X as he starts out wholistically against the good of society and makes an abrupt change to the highest of motives.
Which scene was your favorite?
Nell at the end of the book is battling through the theater to find Miranda while not getting killed.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Hacworth leaving his wife and daughter
Any additional comments?
Love the technology and Victorian society overlayed upon urban plight, decay and social disorder.
