Historia
Near an isolated mansion lies a beautiful garden. In this garden grow luscious flowers, shady trees...and a collection of precious “butterflies” - young women who have been kidnapped and intricately tattooed to resemble their namesakes. Overseeing it all is the Gardener, a brutal, twisted man obsessed with capturing and preserving his lovely specimens.

Revisado: 07-11-18
Listening to this book reminded me of watching and M. Night Shyamalan film. What I mean by that is the build up really grabbed my interest but the end was a major let down. Hutchinson did an amazing job building this world in the form of a beautiful butterfly garden and was very detailed about the ethereal feel of these "butterflies", which made it easy to imagine this book being adapted into a film. The explanation of the sex acts and torture was hard to listen to at times. I must say that I was very confused by the tone of the main character. On one end she seemed like a prisoner who had accepted her fate and on the other end, she seemed like she enjoyed it.
As she was being questioned, she seemed more snarky and protective of her captures than like she was afraid or victimized. I didn't think that a male and female narrator was necessary. I also feel like the male doing the female voice at times made her sound moody and complicit.
Spoiler Alert: Lastly, I feel that the reason that the main character chose to be kidnapped was not compelling enough to justify her decision. I don't feel like the ending was well developed. It sounded like the author was reaching for anything to try and answer questions that the reader may have had. All and all, I would say read it but be prepared to be perplexed at the ending.

Historia
Frederick Douglass was born a slave, and it seemed likely that he would live and die a slave since he was uncertain of his date of birth or the identity of his father. But young Douglass promised himself a different future - he would teach himself to read and write, and one day he would be free from slavery. When he was sent to work as a field hand on a plantation in St. Michael's in 1832, his life was so dispiriting and exhausting that he nearly forgot his dreams of freedom.

A TRUE AMERICAN HERO
Revisado: 01-30-18
Upon discussing the adoption of Christianity, the African American plight, and the attempted justification of slavery, I was told that I should read this book. This narrative serves as a colorful, emotional story about the fight for freedom told by the father of the civil rights movement. Listening to this book makes me truly appreciate the struggles that my ancestors endured in order for me to be here today. Frederick Douglass is a true American hero for not just rallying against slavery but standing up for women's rights as well.

Great Highlights of the Powerful Black Figures
Revisado: 01-19-18
Though these speeches and the people who delivered them have been spoken about for years with great admiration, it was insightful to listen to their speeches in more depth than the snippets we normally hear. Listening to these individuals featured and mentioned in this book makes me want to dig deeper into hearing more from them. As for the audio, I looked the music and actually audio recording that were included in this book. This was a great listen!

Jenifer Lewis keeps it real in this provocative and touching memoir by a Midwestern girl with a dream whose journey from poverty to Hollywood will move, shock, and inspire listeners. Told in the audacious voice her fans adore, Jenifer describes a road to fame made treacherous by dysfunction and undiagnosed mental illness, including a sex addiction. Yet, supported by loving friends and strengthened by "inner soldiers", Jenifer never stopped entertaining and creating.

All Hail to Ms. Jenifer "M the Effing" Lewis
Revisado: 12-06-17
I have loved Jenifer Lewis ever since I can remember. She portrays larger than life personalities that pressing the envelop. In reading this book we find that art, pretty much imitated life in her case. Though I have been a fan of her on the screen work, I didn't know much about her personal life and struggles. It really gives a glimpse into why Jenifer Lewis is Jenifer Lewis. Her story was fabulous with the "sexcapades", lavish lifestyle, big dreams, musical numbers and sheer divatude. It was also heartbreaking as she shared stories of her tumultuous upbringing, fractured mother-daughter relationship, and her struggle with mental illness. I truly appreciate the candor and honesty and, at times, the grandiosity she employed while sharing her story. It was such a treat to have her read this book. I LOVED it!!! A must read. #Irumpapumpumforthebook

We are living in a society where the accomplishments of many African Americans have been forgotten or erased. This audiobook is small tribute to many of these outstanding men of color. This book cannot even come close to recognizing the many achievements of these men but this is only the beginning of a lifelong committment to honor these great men's works.

An Informative Celebration of African American Men
Revisado: 10-30-17
I didn't like that there was no introduction or preface in the reading of this book. The narrator jump dove right in. An intro would have help to set the tone. What I did love was that for the more well known figures, the author went beyond some of the basic facts and stories that most people are privy to. He included some interesting details into the lives of Danny Glover, Jimmy Hendrix, Myles Davis...to name a few. Also, I like how he included black men from different professional sectors, such as education, politics, sports, entertainment, etc. This is a great reminder of the wealth of tenacity and ability that people--men of color possess.

What are Upstanders? Let's start with this: They are the opposite of bystanders. They are problem solvers and protestors, students and parents, professionals and civic leaders. Some fight injustice; others fearlessly challenge the status quo. They are ordinary people who are making extraordinary differences in their communities and beyond. From Salt Lake City to Memphis to Baltimore, Upstanders remind us that participation in civic life has no bounds - and that we can all be the change we wish to see in the world.

VERY INSPIRING STORIES OF EVERYDAY HEROES
Revisado: 10-27-17
This was a great collection of stories of people who not only see problems but take it into their own hands to be the change they want to see in the world. Some of the stories I have heard before from NPR and Buzzfeed. However, some of them were new to me. Listening to these stories made my heart grow 3 sizes. Also, Michael B. Jordan did a great job narrating.

Beautifully Honest and Human Stories
Revisado: 08-15-17
Would you listen to O's Little Guide to Starting Over again? Why?
I'd definitely listen to this audiobook again because there are so many nuggets in there.
What other book might you compare O's Little Guide to Starting Over to and why?
I can't choose one book to compare this to. But I can say that it has remnants of every great self-help book I have ever listened to.
Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book at times was funny. Sometimes hard to listen to because of the pain in the narrator's story but I love how all of the stories ended on a redemptive note.

"My name is 'J' and I'm awkward--and Black. Someone once told me those were the two worst things anyone could be. That someone was right. Where do I start?" Being an introvert in a world that glorifies cool isn't easy. But when Issa Rae, the creator of the Shorty Award-winning hit series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, is that introvert--whether she's navigating love, work, friendships, or rapping--it sure is entertaining.

LOVE!
Revisado: 12-30-15
I decided to listen to this book because about a year ago, I watched a few of the Awkward Black Girl episodes and thought Issa Rae was hilarious! The book did not disappoint. I often times saw myself in her moments of trying to fit in and relished in her recounting of the music scene in the 90's early 2000's. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about her travels to Senegal and Paris , Maryland, New York, and LA. She was very candid in speaking about her mother and father, which endeared them in my eyes. Her stories were very vivid, which made me feel as if I were a fly on the wall. I can't wait to see/hear what she does next. Much love!
