Historia
Regarded throughout the English-speaking world as the standard English translation of the Holy Scriptures, the JPS TANAKH has been acclaimed by scholars, rabbis, lay leaders, Jews, and Christians alike. The JPS TANAKH is an entirely original translation of the Holy Scriptures into contemporary English, based on the masoretic (the traditional Hebrew) text. It is the culmination of three decades of collaboration by academic scholars and rabbis, representing the three largest branches of organized Judaism in the US.

Good book, good narration.
Revisado: 03-13-20
I liked the way this book was done. The interchange between male and female voices without this being a dramatized edition. My biggest gripe and why I can't give it 5 stars is that they were not consistent with the pronunciations of the proper names in the recording. Some names were pronounced with the Hebrew pronunciation while others were pronounced as we would in English for example they read Moses and not Moshe, Joshua and not Yehoshua but they did same Moav for Moab, Ahav for Ahab, or Gilad for Gilead and so on, so I wish they were consistent with their rendering of the names. The translation was okay there were some passages that were rendered differently I suppose to what I'm used to from the English translations, but all in all is is a good translation.

History written like a best selling novel
Revisado: 01-23-20
I you want to read the history of the medieval world without it being just dates and dry information, Susan Wise Bauer is and should be your first an final stop. This is not your regular in this year that happened or any such things, of course the years are there but the information flows like a best selling novel. This was excellently written and John Les lent his beautiful British voice to this one. Magnificently done. Ten stars for the whole set **********

Historia
This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" - literature, epic traditions, private letters, and accounts - to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled.

Wonderful information and expertly read.
Revisado: 01-23-20
I love listening to John Lee as he is probably one of my best narrators. This book itself was excellently written and the information well researched and received. I learnt a lot. I have read other accounts of the ancient world, but this one trumps them all. The story flowed like a novel, yet its history. This is hands down the best book on the ancient world I read (listened)

Beginning in the heady days just after the First Crusade, this volume - the third in the series that began with The History of the Ancient World and The History of the Medieval World - chronicles the contradictions of a world in transition. Impressively researched and brilliantly told, The History of the Renaissance World offers not just the names, dates, and facts but the memorable characters who illuminate the years between 1100 and 1453 - years that marked a sea change in mankind's perception of the world.

Excellent Work
Revisado: 01-23-20
This was a very excellent work and a fantastic sequel to her previous books The History of the Medieval World. The story line was great and she makes history fun to read. The narrator was top and he read very well. I just wished this was not the last one, as this ends at the conquest of Constantinople. I wished she had a fourth one (hope she is working on it or at least thinking about it) from the conquest of Constantinople to modern times or something like that, This was just amazing, The things you learn and the information given is just fantastic.

Good book that makes you think.
Revisado: 09-20-19
This was another good book from Johnathon Cahn, it brought a lot of information to light that I and maybe others had not seen nor looked into. It certainly shows the power of the living and the divine inspiration of the Bible. Understanding the scriptures and how it works is key to living for God and understanding it in its ancient context is of vital importance. Cahn is not asking us to seek out Bible codes and mysteries, but to see what was plainly written in the text concerning Israel and what would to them if they did not keep his Sabbaths and laws concerning them as a nation. He links it to modern America as most theologians, scholars, commentators and writers seem to do, at times this make you wonder as a non American Christian if God remembers us. This is where I think he missed a trick. All nations whether they want to admit it or not are under the rule of God, he sets up kings and puts them down as he wishes, and to simply put this to modern America, is to simply ignore other nations like Russia, France, Germany and Britain (although he does mention them, even if just to pass on baton of leadership to America). What Cahn shows in this book can clearly be seen operating in the histories of these and other countries not least modern Israel. All in all though, it was a good listen and narrator did an excellent job of narrating this book. I recommend this book as a follow up to his previous book, the Harbinger.

In this indispensable volume, one of America's ranking scholars combines a life's work of research and teaching with the art of lively narration. Both authoritative and beautifully told, The Middle Ages is the full story of the thousand years between the fall of Rome and the Renaissance - a time that saw the rise of kings and emperors, the flowering of knighthood, the development of Europe, the increasing power of the Catholic Church, and the advent of the middle class.

In depth look at the middle ages
Revisado: 09-12-19
Most historians give overviews in their history, mostly because they are covering a vast amount time and space with little room to maneuver, but Morris Bishop was more detailed in the lives of medieval Europe than most. It was interesting to know how they ate, when the ate, what the ate, the house decor, the daily lives of peasants and nobles and the intricacies of the daily lives of people on a whole. The reading by Michael Page was very good as well, he had great diction and was easy to follow. I recommend this audio book for those who want tor have a deeper understanding of how people lived throughout medieval Europe.

Well known for his histories of Norman Sicily, Venice, the Byzantine Empire and the Mediterranean, John Julius Norwich has now turned his attention to the oldest continuing institution in the world, tracing the papal line down the centuries from St Peter himself – traditionally (though by no means historically) the first pope – to the present Benedict XVI.Of the 280-odd holders of the supreme office, some have unquestionably been saints; others have wallowed in unspeakable iniquity.

Well written and excellently narrated.
Revisado: 08-22-19
This was excellently written and even better read. The narrator was excellent, his enunciation was the best I've heard in my listening to audio books, his pronunciation of Latin, French and even English was fantastic. The story itself was gripping and fascinating and hard tp pause or put down. It was not just the intrigue, corruption, the scandals, incest, swxuality, cover-ups, murder and absurdity of the popes, but also the history and stories behind the history of the popes. It was interesting to know who was pope at particular time throughout history, their reasons for wanting to become pope and head of the catholic church. One things for sure is that the papacy has been one of, if not the most enduring institutions in the church and of theisy dividing, corrupt and nepotistic. If I was a catholic, after listening to this, I'd have to have a serious rethink. All in all, it was a fantastic book and well worth it. I recommend this book.

What would it be like for modern listeners to sit down beside Jesus as he explained the Bible to them? What life-changing insights might emerge from such a transformative encounter? Lois Tverberg knows the treasures that await listeners willing to learn how to see the Bible through Jewish eyes. By helping them understand the Bible as Jesus and his first-century listeners would have, she bridges the gaps of time and culture in order to open the Bible to listeners today.

Revisado: 07-23-19
A call to community and not one elevating Jew over Gentile or vice versa but a look at the gospel of Jesus Christ the messiah to both Jews and gentiles. This is one that everyone should read. There were a few errors in the reading like sexual immortality instead of sexual immorality and a quote of Peter's that was attributed to Paul, these aside, the narration wasn't that monotonous and was easy to follow along.

Drawing on their own cross cultural experience in global mission, O'Brien and Richards show how better self-awareness and understanding of cultural differences in language, time, and social mores allow us to see the Bible in fresh and unexpected ways. Getting beyond our own cultural assumptions is increasingly important for being Christians in our interconnected and globalized world. Learn to read Scripture as a member of the global body of Christ.

Makes you think, what else I might have missed
Revisado: 07-10-19
This was a good book and while it mostly contrasted westerners (i.e. Americans) with easterners (mostly if not all the time Indonesians), it still however showed how different people in different cultures and experiences interpret the Bible. While I'm not an American, I'm none the less a "western" and this bookakes me wonder if I have been interpreting Scriptures through an American eye. This book will nevertheless cause me to look more intently at what I'm reading and for that alone it deserves it 5 star rating.
