Historia
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

From invisible to invincible
Revisado: 01-15-25
A story that needed to be told! Kristin Hannah does it again! Her characters are multi-layered and believable. It was often excruciating to remember how we were lied to by our government and how we gradually came around to the realization of what was happening in Vietnam. I have vivid memories of going to Oak Knoll Naval Hospital (as a military dependent) and seeing the boys not much older than I was who had lost limbs in the war. The way we treated the veterans of Vietnam was appalling, but nothing more so than this account of the women who served. Thank you, Kristen Hannah, for shedding light on this important part of our history.

Not now.

Scientific Method? Really?
Revisado: 11-30-24
It’s difficult to write this without spoilers, so, be warned! This was a pleasant enough story until folks — scientists, no less, and from NASA, for goodness’ sake — skip over massive experimental protocols to test an “anomaly” with a human subject! Honestly, I nearly stopped listening right then! If experiments had been conducted that way at the real NASA, we’d never have achieved all we have! Still, the story was amusing and I did appreciate the strong (albeit limited, due to the historical period’s restrictions) female characters.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Historia
Thirty-nine was a fantastic year. I was married to the man I loved. I had a body that worked without creaking. My grandma, who raised me, was still healthy, and life was pretty damned good. But as they say, all good things come to an end. One year later, I’m a widow. My joints are starting to ache. Gram is in the nursing home, and dead people think my home is some kind of supernatural bed-and-breakfast. Gluing body parts onto semi-transparent people has become a side job - deceased people I’m not even sure are actually there.

Amusing until the last chapters, when it just got stupid. I was actually yelling at the main character.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Glorious and maddening!
Revisado: 05-09-23
As a woman in the sciences who grew up just a bit later than the main character, I found this story very relatable. Wonderful characters — even the dog! Most of the men made me want to scream and throw things — very accurate depictions of academics. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

The stupidity of the protagonist is agonizing!
Revisado: 02-08-23
I actually talked back to the book as it was playing, frustrated by the ridiculous actions of the protagonist. I guess it says something that I stuck with it, despite my frustration, although, in truth, I was tempted many times to just stop listening.

Historia
From childhood, Laura James knew she was different. She struggled to cope in a world that often made no sense to her, as though her brain had its own operating system. It wasn't until she reached her 40s that she found out why: Suddenly and surprisingly, she was diagnosed with autism. With a touching and searing honesty, Laura challenges everything we think we know about what it means to be autistic. Married with four children and a successful journalist, Laura examines the ways in which autism has shaped her career, her approach to motherhood, and her closest relationships.

So much of my life reflects back from this book!
Revisado: 07-21-21
With sensitivity and in terms it seems may be understood by neurotypical people, Laura James tells her story. Having received my diagnosis at the age of 65, it was both comforting and frustrating to read about another woman’s struggles. I recommend this to anyone who has a woman with ASD in their life.
