Historia
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Great Fun!
Revisado: 01-20-25
Scalzi is a wonderfully imaginative author. I don’t think I’ve been disappointed by any of his books. This one was very well narrated and though a little predictable it was still great fun. Five stars.

Why is Miami… Miami? What does the heartbreaking fate of the cheetah tell us about the way we raise our children? Why do Ivy League schools care so much about sports? What is the Magic Third, and what does it mean for racial harmony? In this provocative new work, Malcolm Gladwell returns to the subject of social epidemics and tipping points, this time with the aim of explaining the dark side of contagious phenomena. Through a series of gripping stories, Gladwell traces the rise of a new and troubling form of social engineering

More Fascinating Stories
Revisado: 12-26-24
Gladwell is both a fascinating author and a truly delightful narrator. That’s a rare combination but so perfect here that it would be very disappointing if he were to produce another book and then let anyone else narrate the audiobook. I was glued to this and sad when it was over. The chapter on the opioid crisis was especially compelling.

The world outside has grown toxic, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. The remnants of humanity live underground in a single silo. But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they want: They are allowed to go outside.

Great Story - Terrific Narrator
Revisado: 09-21-24
A compelling story even after watching the Apple TV series. TV and book have diverged a little but not in the frustrating “why on earth did they change that” way. Recommended to those who have and those who have not seen the TV series. I’m very much looking forward to season two.

Historia
During those dark pre-antibiotic days, when tuberculosis killed one in seven people, white nurses at Sea View, New York’s largest municipal hospital, began quitting. Desperate to avert a public health crisis, city officials summoned Black southern nurses, luring them with promises of good pay, a career, and an escape from the strictures of Jim Crow. But after arriving, they found themselves on an isolated hilltop in the remote borough of Staten Island, yet again confronting racism and consigned to a woefully understaffed facility, dubbed “the pest house” where “no one left alive.”

Not Really About TB
Revisado: 08-23-24
I expected this book to be about finding the cure for tuberculosis. Although finding a cure did come up as a subplot, this was primarily a story of racial discrimination against black nurses in the United States from 1900 through 1960 I didn’t enjoy the writer style with her excessive description making it feel like you were reading a thesaurus in many places rather than a novel. I found myself skipping chapters just to try and get through it, and focusing on the chapter titles that suggested something about TB rather than some particular nurse, trying to buy a house. This book will no doubt, be fascinating to those looking into the history of segregation and racial discrimination, but is not compelling as a story about tuberculosis.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Historia
Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous–and most revered–doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

A Truly Outstanding Autobiography
Revisado: 07-08-24
I’m so glad Dr Fauci narrated this himself. In so many places and so many chapters it’s a story of his steadfast commitment to science and public health. His calm reassuring voice that we’ve all come to know so well made these harrowing episodes seem less stressful just as they did through all the public health crises. A wonderful book that I’d heartily recommend.

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

An Important Book
Revisado: 06-18-24
This was deeply unsettling but I’m glad I read it. I hope it gets the widest possible audience as the message of how quickly we can lose our civilizations is very very important and I suspect not at all well known. I’ll be recommending it to friends. You should read it too.

Across America a mysterious disease is turning ordinary people into raving, paranoid murderers who inflict brutal horrors on strangers, themselves, and even their own families. Working under the government’s shroud of secrecy, CIA operative Dew Phillips crisscrosses the country trying in vain to capture a live victim. With only decomposing corpses for clues, CDC epidemiologist Margaret Montoya races to analyze the science behind this deadly contagion. She discovers that these killers all have one thing in common.

Dreadful Narration Spoils The Story
Revisado: 03-12-24
The author narrated this himself. Big mistake. He may be a decent writer but I couldn’t finish this book due to the worst narration I’ve heard in over ten years on Audible. His female characters sound utterly absurd and the males aren’t a whole lot better. Just because you can write a novel doesn’t mean you’re qualified as a voice actor. Stay away from this title.

Historia
Once upon a time, in the magical land of San Francisco, there lived a not-so-ordinary girl named Laurel Pettigrew. She was supposed to be the Chosen One. The plan was simple: She would vanquish the great evil Tybus in an epic battle. But destiny had other ideas, and Laurel's performance in the whole heroics department was a colossal flop. Now, instead of being a legendary hero, Laurel's the resident pariah of the magic realm. And what’s worse, the dark wizard Tybus swooped in, took over the realm, and forced all supernatural creatures to live under his tyrannical rule.
