Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Excellent audio version
Revisado: 02-04-21
So happy I listened to the audio version read by Tom Hanks. Loved the characters, even the ones I despised.

Beautiful and heartbreaking
Revisado: 07-06-19
Beautifully written and so sad. The kind of book that leaves you thinking about how different the fate of the daughters could have been if different choices were made at different times. And it shows how a mother’s love of her children is like nothing else.

Thirteen-year-old Emily Poe has been given the opportunity of a lifetime: A chance to attend the exclusive Audyn School in Manhattan. But to win the scholarship, she has to pass a test like nothing she’s ever experienced before: A nearly bare room, a set of strange clues, a locked door. Not great
Revisado: 05-20-19
I fought my way to the end, because I was curious enough to want to know where this was all going (so I guess it’s not entirely terrible), but I wouldn’t recommend it. Perhaps I’m not the targeted audience, so that could explain some of it. However, a big flaw - which I have also seen mentioned by others - is the premise that these are middle school kids. Not realistic at all.

Historia
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery, or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Absolutely wonderful
Revisado: 03-24-19
I loved this book and read it quickly despite its length. The narrator is excellent and the story was so engaging, funny and just heartbreaking at times. This book will stay with me for a long time and I am recommending it to all my book-loving friends!

Brilliant!
Revisado: 05-02-17
So shocking, frightening and brilliant. And I really loved the performance of Claire Danes. I've already recommended to many friends and the ones who are reading it now, are also absolutely enthralled. I was actually quite disappointed with myself for not having read it years ago...But as many have said, reading it in this time and age also gives it a whole new and scary meaning.
