Historia
As the daughter of a drug dealer, Wavy knows not to trust people, not even her own parents. It's safer to keep her mouth shut and stay out of sight. Struggling to raise her little brother, Donal, eight-year-old Wavy is the only responsible adult around. Obsessed with the constellations, she finds peace in the starry night sky above the fields behind her house until one night her stargazing causes an accident. After witnessing his motorcycle wreck, she forms an unusual friendship with one of her father's thugs, Kellen, a tattooed ex-con with a heart of gold.

Oh of Julia Whelan’s male voices are identical
Revisado: 06-28-23
I love the book. And I love everything about Julia Whelan‘s performance, except when she speaks male voices. They are all the same and I cannot help but remember some of the most despicable characters which that male voice has portrayed. I think the possibility of including a male narrator alongside Julia Whelan’s, narration of the entire rest of the book or any books would be a good idea.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Total disappointment

I was expecting a work of literary value. The characters and story had nothing to offer. Demon had several opportunities for growth, but he threw them all away.

A repetitious waste of time
Revisado: 11-03-22
The story follows the lives of the central characters but there is very little or no character development except for the boy who is the narrator who grows up from childhood to an old man. But even he is predictable from adolescence on. And there’s a great large portion of the story that is told as if it’s the writing of a screenplay and the wording is just stupid all of this fading in

Historia
As a panicked world goes into lockdown, Lucy Barton is uprooted from her life in Manhattan and bundled away to a small town in Maine by her ex-husband and on-again, off-again friend, William. For the next several months, it’s just Lucy, William, and their complex past together in a little house nestled against the moody, swirling sea. Rich with empathy and emotion, Lucy by the Sea vividly captures the fear and struggles that come with isolation, as well as the hope, peace, and possibilities that those long, quiet days can inspire.

I agree with her sister, she really is selfish and whiny
Revisado: 09-25-22
I’ve read all of the Lucy Barton books and this is the one that I like the least. I know I am never very pleased in the beginning because she always starts out complaining and whining over things and never being very satisfied or happy about anything but then gets a little more generous and open minded as the story progresses but it wasn’t until the very end of the story that she took a little bit broader view and was a little bit more generous and kind hearted.. I just found her to be immature And boring.

Historia
As this urgent, genre-defying book opens, a woman who has recently been elevated to prominence for her social media posts travels around the world to meet her adoring fans. She is overwhelmed by navigating the new language and etiquette of what she terms "the portal," where she grapples with an unshakable conviction that a vast chorus of voices is now dictating her thoughts. When existential threats--from climate change and economic precariousness to the rise of an unnamed dictator and an epidemic of loneliness--begin to loom, she posts her way deeper into the portal's void.

Can't reconcile Part One with Part Two
Revisado: 02-01-22
I really enjoyed the main character in Part Two and had empathy for her and everyone in the story. It was personal and I could follow it. I had mixed emotions, just as the characters had. And it all made sense to me. Alone, I would have rated the book higher.
But I did not like Part One at all. I would definitely rate it much lower based on it. In fact, I probably would have returned it. I did not understand what she was trying to say about the digital world we live in at all. She just sounded crazy. Nothing profound. I can't understand how anyone looked forward to the publication of that Part of the book. It really wasn't an exceptional book. And I was disappointed in my purchase.

Kill the editor!
Revisado: 12-18-21
I love ballet and there is so much to admire about this book but I cannot believe an editor who would allow a story to go back and forth between years and make it so difficult to follow chronologically. It just didn’t make sense to present it that way.
I have listened to over 500 books in the last two years and have written very very few reviews but my opinion about how the story was presented was so strong in this case that I felt I had to say something.
Otherwise there is so much about the story that is enjoyable.

Jonathan Franzen’s novels are celebrated for their unforgettably vivid characters and for their keen-eyed take on contemporary America. Now, in Crossroads, Franzen ventures back into the past and explores the history of two generations. With characteristic humor and complexity, and with even greater warmth, he conjures a world that resonates powerfully with our own.

Didn't Hang Together as well as I Wished
Revisado: 10-17-21
The children and adolescents were more fully realized and developed than the adults, who appeared fairly limited and petty in their roles. I found the younger people, with the exception of the adolescent, Perry, considered mentally ill, to be more morally defined than the adult, who often acted as morally bankrupt individuals. My empathy was truly with the younger people.
I did not particularly care for the ending and thought the author left us with an either/or situation, failing to sufficiently define the failings in each sibling's position

Reviewers who berated narrator were right
Revisado: 09-24-21
I cannot understand why such a great author would risk a narrator with such a high pitched squeaky, intolerable voice. Fortunately, she would switch in and out of it. I was just about to return the book. I am so glad that I did not have to. I am not asked any questions about returns. I know that's the stated Audible policy, but I feel that I am treated with no questions asked because I purchase so many books. Of course I could be wrong about this. But I never feel stuck with something I do not want to keep.
I enjoy it very much when all of the characters has some self knowledge or insight––when they're not totally clueless. When you can care about each and every one of them. When you can wish them well from beginning to end.
