This Audible book would have been much better with a competent narrator. The narrator was the worst narrator I’ve ever listened to - and I’ve listened to almost 500 Audible books.

The narrator had approximately 4 voices available with the dominant voice being appropriate for a Shakespearian tragedy’s monologue. The thing is they were randomly appearing with no association with any character or really any correlation to the material being read. It was very difficult and very distracting to try and figure out which character was speaking at any one time. Even a monotone reading of the text would have been more enjoyable. It was awful.

It really took away from what was an interesting story and good world building.

I loved the Alex Verus series. This series has hints of that promise. But I’ve very rarely read 2 books that progressed so slowly. Almost nothing substantial occurs in this book. If this series was completed and the listener could listen to the 14 books in the series back to back and just zone out in all the slow parts, this might be a great series. But it’s book 2 and now we have to wait for the next little trickle of plot advancement.

Additionally, I find the magic system to be mostly uninspiring. And to cap off my criticisms the narrator has a very tedious and sleepy way of speaking that just added to the overall lack of energy or feeling of progress.

Maybe the next 12 or so books will surprise with their enhanced pace and steady exciting plot progression.

The author is a master storyteller. His world building and intertwining of the plot around many characters and situations is masterful.

And yet his greatest skill I believe is his descriptions of fighting - whether it is in space with massive ships and great distances or on earth in the forests and cities (Traitor Son Cycle). I have always been amazing at his intricate and detailed and yet easily followed descriptions of battles. He is better than any other author I have ever read at this - and I have read 1000s of Books.

These two books (Artifact Space and Deep Black) are a masterpiece of space travel fiction.

The narrator is excellent as well.

Progression fantasy series I have ever read. The progression is captivating and the plot, character development and narration is fantastic.

I just don’t know why this series isn’t listed on the best of lists. It’s the best progression fantasy series I’ve read in years. And i’ve read a ton of progression fantasy.

And the narrators are absolutely fantastic. They have ruined it for me when it comes to one narrator doing all the voices. It’s so much better with both of them.

This is the best progression fantasy book I’ve read in years … and I’ve read many. This book is written for adults (not teenagers), by an excellent writer (not a former gamer who knows they can “write” a “great” book) and narrated by two of the best narrators I’ve listened to (they are a perfect match to the characters).

This book is excellent at developing the characters, building the world and having a self consistent narrative - unlike too many books in the genre what have plots with paper mache characters and world building around it.

You should listen to this book.

I just loved this 3 book series. Many more ups than downs. I liked that the story was well fleshed out with many different and interesting developments/characters. The magical system(s) were very interesting and … numerous.

I would consider this series a must read for the litrpg genre.

I love this series but… this book (LastRock) is the best by far. This series just keeps getting better and that makes me very happy.

Disappointing Second Book

I really don’t understand how a progression fantasy resets not only the world of the MC but basically the whole magic system in a second book. Here are my issues
1. MC almost completely starts over their progression with a mishmash of several new magic systems. (What is the point here?)
2. The plot has little focus and very slow development.
3. All the characters except the MC are new.
4. For most of the book the MC doesn’t have any coherent plan or progression path.
5. The MCs skills are novelty skills which don’t develop very well and the MC stays mostly underpowered regardless of their supposed “advantages”.
6. This second book did not rely on almost anything that happened in the first book - it could have been a new stand alone book with a few new pages of introductory plot at the beginning.
7. Needless to say it was a long slog.

Conversely the narrator was excellent. Switching narrators can be problematic but I felt this new narrator was just as good as Travis Baldry.

… I expected. The title and cover art threw me off. I kept avoiding starting this book because I thought it was a more kids focused book.

No. That’s not in fact true. I have read a lot of progression fantasy and this book is right up there with the best. I really enjoyed it. And I heartily recommend the book(s).
