Historia
Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet.

Deceptively simple - at first
Revisado: 09-23-23
At first I thought this was a sort of “Brave New World” meets “Harry Potter.” Couldn’t have been more wrong. It does have political undertones but is also a sci-fi exercise in leadership and deception. Peter Jackson should direct this movie.

Historia
Spanning the years 1940 to 1965, Defender of the Realm, the third volume of William Manchester’s The Last Lion, picks up shortly after Winston Churchill became prime minister - when his tiny island nation stood alone against the overwhelming might of Nazi Germany. The Churchill portrayed by Manchester and Reid is a man of indomitable courage, lightning-fast intellect, and an irresistible will to action.

A different perspective for Americans
Revisado: 04-03-23
This was the first book about WWII I've read that is from other than the American perspective, and it casts a very different light on our participation than American writers do. That's inevitable, but the change is definitely worth the read for any American who is interested in that period of European and American history. It helps to be reminded that not even our allies are as impressed with us as we ourselves are. (For example, right or wrong, Churchill apparently thought Eisenhower was too dim a bulb to be the Allied Forces Commander.) Paul Reid and I presume William Manchester ( I haven't read the first two volumes) have a wonderful way with words. I wish I could remember half of the elegant phrases used here.
My one big disappointment was the narrator. Reid should have narrated the entire book. He is natural and engaging in his portion. Chafer has the same cadence and rhythm in every sentence, to the point where someone could put the words to a melody line and every phrase would be exactly the same. It became irritating very early on, and time and exposure didn't help.

Historia
In AD 793 Norse warriors struck the English isle of Lindisfarne and laid waste to it. Wave after wave of Norse "sea wolves" followed in search of plunder, land, or a glorious death in battle. Much of the British Isles fell before their swords, and the continental capitals of Paris and Aachen were sacked in turn. Turning east, they swept down the uncharted rivers of central Europe, captured Kiev, and clashed with mighty Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire.

Seldom does a history provide detailed accuracy that is also entertaining. The narrator is also excellent. Highly recommend.

Historia
For anyone interested in foreign affairs, this book will catalyze debate, and not only for Mr. Huntington's concluding scenario for World War III. He sees how this could happen if the U.S. mishandles an increasingly xenophobic and truculent China. Chinese assertiveness, Huntington argues, rises out of its felt grievances against a relatively weakening West. After China, the gravest challenge to the West is resurgent Islamic identity.

A valuable perspective
Revisado: 02-21-23
I’m not sure he covered all the subplots, and I think he should have explored other potential scenarios. It’s clear from the perspective of 2023 that his Asian predictions did not anticipate the Arab Spring or anything like 9/11 for the short term. But his overall assessments make sense.

Historia
Princess Sylviianel has always known that on her 12th birthday she too would be bound to her own Pegasus. All members of the royal family have been thus bound since the Alliance was made almost a thousand years ago; the binding system was created to strengthen the Alliance, because humans and pegasi can only communicate formally, through specially trained Speaker magicians. Sylvi is accustomed to seeing pegasi every day at the palace, but she still finds the idea of her binding very daunting.

Half a book
Revisado: 01-16-23
The story was great, until it ended just as the inevitable existential battle was about to begin. It’s clear there was meant to be a sequel and equally clear, after eleven years, that it will likely never be written. I wish I’d paid more attention to the reviews before purchasing it.

In The End Is Always Near, Dan Carlin looks at questions and historical events that force us to consider what sounds like fantasy; that we might suffer the same fate that all previous eras did. Will our world ever become a ruin for future archaeologists to dig up and explore? The questions themselves are both philosophical and like something out of The Twilight Zone.

A tad unfocused
Revisado: 01-12-23
For me, it was hard to keep the focus point in mind as the author wandered afield with gruesome details of conflicts. I’m not saying the details shouldn’t have been included, but I think his point would have been sharper had he clarified that point better at the end of each segment. I confess his reading style grated on me, and likely colors my opinion. He wasn’t as bad a narrator as some authors are when reading their own works, but his overly dramatic growls and rapid changes in volume throughout the work made it annoying to listen to.

Millions of people visit xkcd.com each week to read Randall Munroe's iconic webcomic. His stick-figure drawings about science, technology, language, and love have a large and passionate following. Fans of xkcd ask Munroe a lot of strange questions. What if you tried to hit a baseball pitched at 90 percent of the speed of light? How fast can you hit a speed bump while driving and live? If there were a robot apocalypse, how long would humanity last?

But about halfway through I was so tired of the drill-down level of detail that it was no longer entertaining. I’m not the target audience for this book.

One of the best
Revisado: 10-26-22
I enjoy fractured fairy tales, and this is one of the most imaginative ones I’ve ever read. It created a backstory for Lewis Carroll’s Queen of Hearts that is both intricate and totally unexpected. The reader does absolute Justice to the many characters and enhances the story considerably. I won’t give away any of the plot; this story deserves to unfold in its own way

Stop me if you’re heard this one: Veteran comic Chauncy and social-media star José are the very definition of “opposites attract”. But sparks, and jokes, fly after the two of them embark upon a beautiful romance for the ages...two vastly different ages. Starring Drew Droege and Gabe Gonzalez, The Comedians is a modern queer love story, told through individual stand-up acts. We hear the ups and downs of their journey—from falling hard to failing harder than a botched punchline—in this hilariously relatable play about love, loss, and, above all, "The Laugh".

Poignant Drama Unfolds on Stand-Up Comedy Stage
- De Philip D. Hughes-Luing en 09-18-22
too shrill
Revisado: 10-07-22
This started out OK, and the premise is intriguing - two comedians describe the arc of their relationship through their standup routines. The older character was mildly funny, but the younger character became more and more shrill and angry as his routines progressed. I happen to be close to a couple with this same dynamic, and this wasn't funny at all. It became stressful and then cringeworthy and then "I have to get out of this room" repulsive.

Dee Brown's eloquent, meticulously documented account of the systematic destruction of the American Indian during the second half of the 19th century uses council records, autobiographies, and firsthand descriptions. Brown allows great chiefs and warriors of the Dakota, Ute, Sioux, Cheyenne, and other tribes to tell us in their own words of the battles, massacres, and broken treaties that finally left them demoralized and defeated.
