In nine short stories, seven of which have never previously been available in print, and one brand-new, never-before-seen Sherlock Holmes mystery - available together for the first time - Laurie R. King blends her long-running brand of crime fiction with historical treats and narrative sleight of hand.

A wonderful addition to the "canon"

Some published before, some new, all well done. Especially the last story, a new one with Holmes and his granddaughter solving a mystery involving Father Christmas. Bravo !

Historia
Meet Augustus Berrycloth-Young—fop, flaneur, and Englishman abroad—as he chronicles the Jazz Age from his perch atop the city that never sleeps. That is, until his old friend Thomas Nightingale arrives, pursuing a rather mysterious affair concerning an old saxophone—which will take Gussie from his warm bed, to the cold shores of Long Island, and down to the jazz clubs where music, magic, and madness haunt the shadows . . .

Not my favorite in this series
Revisado: 10-01-24
While I generally love both the Rivers of London series, and the narration by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, for some reason I had trouble following the dialog of the main character, Augustus Berrycloth-Young. The quest of Nightingale to find a friend(?) of Molly takes him to New York, and the Harlem / Jazz scene there after WWI was certainly interesting.

Historia
When retired FBI Agent Patrick Henderson calls in an 'X-Ray Sierra India' incident, the operator doesn't understand. He tells them to pass it up the chain till someone does. That person is FBI Special Agent Kimberley Reynolds. Leaving Quantico for snowbound Northern Wisconsin, she finds that a tornado has flattened half the town—and there's no sign of Henderson. Things soon go from weird to worse, as neighbors report unsettling sightings, key evidence goes missing, and the snow keeps rising—cutting off the town, with no way in or out . . .

Enjoyed the visit to the midwest
Revisado: 11-13-23
While it took a while to "warm up" to Kimberly Reynolds in her own adventure, I did enjoy the story. No, not as much as the main ones with Peter and Nightingale, but still worth the time. The narrator was fine. Yea, the "parker" for "parka" thing was a little annoying, but not that big a deal.

Just couldn’t get into it. Well narrated, and had the outline of a good story, but seemed lacking in character development. I ended up listening at a higher speed, just to get through it.

Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal. When one such creature threatens an independent tutor, Harry Dresden must shake off the blood and dirt of his most recent battles and rise to the occasion, even when it turns out that the new predator is far more dangerous and connected than first appearances would suggest.

Way better than I expected
Revisado: 07-16-22
After reading all the "Where is Marsters?" and "It's too short for a whole credit!" negative reviews, I had my doubts. They were unfounded. Butcher does a great job narrating. If James Marsters is 5/5 (and he is) then Jim Butcher get 4.9/5 here. Excellent job. And the story is "just right" in length for what it is. If you think every credit has to go to a Stormlight Archives or Wheel of Time book, that's fine (I love them too), but IMHO anything by Butcher is worth a credit, A nice story to tide us over till the next Dresden, or Cinder Spires ! Listen past the end credits for some bloopers.

Nora Kelly, a young curator at the Santa Fe Institute of Archaeology, is approached by historian Clive Benton with a once-in-a-lifetime proposal: to lead a team in search of the so-called "Lost Camp" of the tragic Donner Party. Benton tells Kelly he has stumbled upon an amazing find: the long-sought diary of one of the victims, which has an enigmatic description of the Lost Camp. Nora agrees to lead an expedition to locate and excavate it-to reveal its long-buried secrets. Once in the mountains, they learn that discovering the camp is only the first step in a mounting journey of fear.

Refreshing to be back to mysteries
Revisado: 03-02-22
I almost didn't get this, given the plethora of "the narrator is awful" comments. But she is actually just fine, at least until our favorite FBI agent makes an appearance in the epilogue. No, Ms Farrell is not René Auberjonois, who's Pendergast is absolutely perfect. Maybe that will improve with time, as I expect him to make regular appearances as the stories of Corey and Nora continue. What I did like is that this is a return to the actual "solve a mystery / whodunnit" type of story reminiscent of "Still Life with Crows". Getting more than a little tired of "Pendergast does James Bond" stories we've been getting for a while now. I look forward to listening to more of these. Criticizing this book for not being a Pendergast novel is just .... dumb.

This is a land of long memory and hidden corners, a land that had known Vlad the Impaler, a land from whose churchyards the shades creep. When Queen Marie calls, Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes are as dubious as they are reluctant. But a young girl is involved, and a beautiful queen. Surely it won't take long to shine light on this unlikely case of what would seem to be strigoi? Or, as they are known in the West...vampires.

A welcome return to form.
Revisado: 08-02-21
I’ve read, or listened to, all of the Mary Russell stories since becoming “hooked” after reading The Beekeeper’s Apprentice” what seems like ages ago. While I’ve always enjoyed the stories, some were more enjoyable than others. Ms, King has returned to top form with this one, and I’m very glad. The story is interesting and well plotted out and the dialogue between Russel and Holmes is close to perfect. As Mary says at the very end, it was as close to a “story book ending” as one can get. The narration by Ms. Sterling is, as always, perfect.

The saga begins - and is better with Marsters
Revisado: 02-17-20
In preparation for Peace Talks (finally) coming out this I decided to do a “re-read” (via Audible) of this, my favorite long running Fantasy series. I’ve listened to some of them, read some, and had done both for Skin Game (which is GREAT). Before starting the Audible version of Storm Front, I read through the reviews, and was very perplexed about some of the negative comments about James Marsters reading. I always thought he was as close to the perfect Harry Dresden as could be imagined. Maybe this, being his first attempt, wasn’t as good?? NO, as always, and even to start out, he was incredibly good. One of, if not THE best reader for Audible, IMHO. So ... if you’re looking to start in on a truly great series, this is an excellent place to start.

In the world of Warbreaker, each person is born endowed with the power of one Breath―which can be sold and collected by others, then used to Awaken objects and even corpses to do their bidding. A few individuals who die in glory return as gods, with the power of thousands of Breath, but no memory of their mortal lives―and are enthroned in the Court of Gods in Hallandren’s capital. To Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris, the abuse of Breath and the claim of the Returned to be gods are repugnant blasphemy.

Another fine Sanderson Cosmere novel.

Maybe not quite as good as Mistborn or the Stormlight Archive, but excellent none the less. Adds another magic system, and introduces a few characters, and objects, which show up in other Cosmere novels. Excellent narration.

Good story, dynamic range problems in the audio
Revisado: 02-05-20
This may seem an odd complaint, but we found it almost impossible to listen to on a short trip in the car. The dynamic range of the audio is too great. If you have the volume up enough to hear the quiet conversations, the other parts were way too loud. If you adjusted the volume for that, much of the conversation was impossible to follow. The story itself seemed very good, and if you listen on headphones at home, you’ll probably love it ;-)
