Historia
The Brandenburgers were Hitler's Special Forces, a band of mainly foreign German nationals who used disguise and fluency in other languages to complete daring missions into enemy territory. Overshadowed by stories of their Allied equivalents, their history has largely been ignored. First published in 1984, de Giampietro's highly-personal and eloquent memoir is a vivid account of his experiences. In astonishing detail, he delves into the reality of life in the unit from everyday concerns and politics to training and involvement in Brandenburg missions.

The ends justify the means?
Revisado: 07-22-24
I am convinced Giampietro’s memoir would have been VERY pro Hitler had the German’s won the war. Psychologically, the most revealing part of the memoir is where Giampietro confronts his commanding officer, after deciding wearing uniforms of the enemy is dishonorable. Giampietro’s Lieutenant listens to Giampietro’s concerns and then gives a speech that reminded me of a speech a character out of an Ayn Rand novel might make about war. The message in the speech? The ends justify the means. Victors write the history books so it Giampietro’s duty to do what is required to assist Germany to win the war. The Lieutenant persuades Giampietro with his arguments. Giampietro, therefore, decides to stay with the Brandenburger Special Forces unit. As long as Germany is winning the war, Giampietro enthusiastically plays his role in winning the war. As the Third Reich loses the war, Giampietro’s “moral” qualms reappear. Suddenly, the (losing) ends no longer justify the means. I enjoyed this memoir, but more from what it says about us human beings psychologically, spiritually and emotionally than as a war memoir - which is incomplete. Giampieto’s experiences fighting Partisans in Yugoslavia in 1944 is left virtually blank. So are the end of the war details in Italy and elsewhere. Giampietro seems more concerned with the losing “end” and explaining himself morally than he does with the “means” he used from 1943-45 to survive. In this life, there are no “ends.” Only “means.” Please do not interpret this conclusion as a pious, prissy condemnation of Germany during the Second World War. Churchill’s Great Britain; Roosevelt’s United States and Joe stalin’s Soviet Union, were all maneuvering to dominate the world stage - and like Giampietro, their ends justified the means also. Nevertheless, Giampietro’s overall interesting memoir reveals the hopelessness of us human beings as we attempt to negotiate ourselves through this life without the light of God…

Hampton Sides' superb account of this epic clash in the Korean War relies on years of archival research, unpublished letters, declassified documents, and interviews with scores of marines and Koreans who survived the siege. While expertly detailing the follies of the American leaders, On Desperate Ground is an immediate, grunt's-eye view of history, enthralling in its narrative pace and powerful in its portrayal of what ordinary men are capable of in the most extreme circumstances.

The greatness of the Marine Corps is well told BUT
Revisado: 02-11-24
The criticism of Douglas MacArthur reveals the author’s conformist, military industrial/Madison Avenue frame of reference and prejudices. MacArthur was a genius. In war there is NO substitute for absolute victory. MacArthur was correct. Once China entered that war, the United States should have used nuclear weapons and Chang Kai-Shek’s military to DESTROY communist China. Harry Truman, though admirable in many other ways, where Korea was concerned , was a coward. He involved the United States in a war without congressional approval but lacked the nerve to see the war through to victory. As a result, this nation not only suffered the agonies of the inconclusive Korean War but the agonies of Vietnam as well as the destruction of our constitution. Since Harry Truman, every President except Eisenhower has felt free to use our military in foreign matters and conflicts without congressional approval. MacArthur, while always obeying presidential orders, made it CLEARLY he thought Truman was wrong. Douglas MacArthur! A great American!

Historia
In this revelatory, dynamic biography, Benson Bobrick, profiles George H. Thomas, arguing that he was the greatest and most successful general of the Civil War. Because Thomas didn't live to write his memoirs, his reputation has been largely shaped by others, most notably Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman, two generals with whom Thomas served and who diminished his successes in their favor in their own memoirs.

Great biography; and greater revisionist history
Revisado: 01-11-24
A must read for anyone interested in the War for Southern Independence. Indispensable for any reader interested in balanced, objective American history - and a mighty biography of a virtually unknown and under appreciated American hero and historical figure. A concisely, cogently and well argued biographical tour de force. Highly recommended for anyone wishing to objectively evaluate Grant and Sherman’s leadership and generalship during the War for Southern Independence that transcends the myth, propaganda and legend that affects popular history and biography - which more resembles hagiography couched in a smug, scholarly patina.

Terrible. The author is a left wing moralizer, trying to bootstrap stoic philosophy to her vacuous, socio-political reflections.

The United States is a degenerate nation.
Revisado: 07-21-23
That the citizens of the United States of America could elect (twice) Barack Hussein Obama as president of the United States is indictive of the degraded, degenerate, decadent decline of the minds and morality of American voters - and the duplicity of the so-called "elites" in the media; in the department of justice; in the federal government and the "money changers" who control this nation. That Obama chose criminal Joe Biden to be his vice president is an accurate representation of Obama's "progressive" presidency and of who and what Obama is as a human being and leader. "Unmasking Obama" is an excellent volume which exposes the evil of not only Barack Obama, but the policy makers in control of our culture and nation, Our nation is headed for much suffering and divine discipline. "Woe unto them that call evil good and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for weet, and sweet for bitter." Isaiah 5:20.
