A truly phenomenal audio performance
Revisado: 02-12-24
If you’re into absolutely filthy smut with a true love entanglement and fistfuls of murder, you’ll love the plot of this book. And it is a good story. It’s not a life changing narrative but it’s entertaining, has just enough twists to keep things interesting and plenty of sexy steam.
But the real gem here is the performance. This was a spectacular listen. If you exclusively consume audiobooks, I would encourage you to listen, even if the genre isn’t your thing because this performance is SO MUCH FUN. It’s essentially a two person stage show. I wish I had a better comparison because the glory days of radio-read performance could never measure up. Their banter is dynamic, fast-paced and very sexy. The way the narration moves and flips is somehow impeccably seamless. It’s a fanatic ride and one of the best audiobook experiences I’ve ever heard. Here’s hoping this level of entertainment becomes industry standard.

“We were all heading for each other on a collision course, no matter what. Maybe some people are just meant to be in the same story". At first, Jude and her twin brother are NoahandJude; inseparable. Noah draws constantly and is falling in love with the charismatic boy next door, while daredevil Jude wears red-red lipstick, cliff-dives, and does all the talking for both of them. Years later, they are barely speaking. Something has happened to change the twins in different yet equally devastating ways...but then Jude meets an intriguing, irresistible boy and a mysterious new mentor.

I loved this book.
Revisado: 06-11-23
An eloquent version of a coming of age trope. Nelson’s long, emotional monologues capture the inner dialogue of confusion, feeling, and desperation that we all pretend to grow out of but never really do.
The sibling dynamic is so relatable and a critical cornerstone to each plot line. Refreshing to see the familiar dynamic in YA.
I enjoyed how this was performed by two great readers. I’d listen to it again.

What makes “cults” so intriguing and frightening? What makes them powerful? The reason why so many of us binge Manson documentaries by the dozen and fall down rabbit holes researching suburban moms gone QAnon is because we’re looking for a satisfying explanation for what causes people to join - and more importantly, stay in - extreme groups. We secretly want to know: could it happen to me? Amanda Montell’s argument is that, on some level, it already has.

This book lives up to the expectations. It will surely repeat some cult knowledge you already have with plenty of new anecdotes and insights you’ll learn from.
The performance can be robotic at items but is overall very well done.

Historia
Acclaimed novelist Quan Barry delivers a tour de female force in this delightful novel. Set in the coastal town of Danvers, Massachusetts, where the accusations began that led to the 1692 witch trials, We Ride Upon Sticks follows the 1989 Danvers High School Falcons field hockey team, who will do anything to make it to the state finals—even if it means tapping into some devilishly dark powers. In chapters dense with 1980s iconography—from Heathers to "big hair"—Barry expertly weaves together the individual and collective progress of this enchanted team.

A fun, easy ride.
Revisado: 09-29-21
This book is chock-full of nostalgia and quaint references. It's also a wonderful, collective retelling of teenage memories and the way they shape us. I'm surprised to see it's almost 15 hours because I felt like it flew by.
It's wonderful, lighthearted read if you're looking for something magical without the darkness. A great October read for sure.

Historia
As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours. Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret.

I had a Visceral Reaction
Revisado: 09-29-21
This book is highly entertaining.
The performance is spectacular and it takes no time at all to become completely wrapped up in the detective's journey. You're alongside him through the murder case, yes, but also the self-reflection and complete lack thereof. I felt for him, was furious with him and about 300 other emotions while listening to the many chapters. I found myself pacing through my apartment, completely irate at his behavior and having to take a break out of sheer anger. A story must be good to inspire this type of emotional response.
French does an excellent job of putting you in the mind of this character and it's SO well performed. It's difficult to remove the author from the main narrator. I wouldn't call him likeable, but I would recommend this listen to anyone interested in complex protagonists they would not want to be friends with.

As an unnamed but unforgettable woman muses on her life—from meet cute to marriage and parenthood—her recollections inexorably build to a devastating truth. In this shattering performance, Carey Mulligan, star of the critically lauded drama An Education, captivates audiences with playwright Dennis Kelly’s harrowing ruminations on family, ambition, gender, and violence.

Historia
Julia Serano shares her experiences and insights - both pre- and post-transition - to reveal the ways in which fear, suspicion, and dismissiveness toward femininity shape our societal attitudes toward trans women, as well as gender and sexuality as a whole. Serano's well-honed arguments and pioneering advocacy stem from her ability to bridge the gap between the often-disparate biological and social perspectives on gender. In this provocative manifesto, she exposes how deep-rooted the cultural belief is that femininity is frivolous, weak, and passive.

This book will make you uncomfortable.
Revisado: 09-11-18
If I had more space the title of this review would be "this book will make you uncomfortable and that's why you should read it.
Forget every chapter, every paragraph of Serrano's book is an education. The chapters ebb and flow between horrifying historical facts, (typical of history's treatment of any kind of "outlier") emotional anecdotes and fiercely educational moments. While I did struggle to remember a the terms (cis privilege, right here) I do feel like I ended the book feeling more educated and empathetic to transgender people. At the very least, I have a better understanding of just how deep cis privilege goes and can reflect further on how to better myself and be conscious of my privilege as a move through the world.
I knock it down a star because I do think Serrano's narration is a too slow. I often speed up books but increased the speed here even more than usual.

Incredibly Inspiring
Revisado: 09-11-18
I feel like I should begin with the classic disclaimer of "I don't usually like it when (fill in the blank...well here's my blank) authors perform their own work BUT Cecile Richards is sublime.
I knew very little about Cecile and her story other than her work at PP so I went I with an open mind. I was surprised and delighted at the raw, emotional and honest account of her life throughout it's various up and downs. And if you take anything away from this book, it's that organizing can be as heartbreaking as it is rewarding. Cecile does a truly lovely job narrating her side of various events and while she's always very respectful, I appreciate how unapologetic she is for her politics and her work over the years.
Hers is a story of grassroots organizing with a "pull up your bootstraps" attitude. She is humble and thoughtful. I would highly recommend this book to anyone even mildly interested in politics or entrepreneurship. I find that good lessons and honest storyteling transcend industries and are relevant to all walks of life. You'll find both in this book.

In Her Body and Other Parties, Carmen Maria Machado blithely demolishes the arbitrary borders between psychological realism and science fiction, comedy and horror, fantasy and fabulism. While her work has earned her comparisons to Karen Russell and Kelly Link, she has a voice that is all her own. In this electric and provocative debut, Machado bends genre to shape startling narratives that map the realities of women's lives and the violence visited upon their bodies.

Give it a Try. It surprised me.
Revisado: 06-05-18
Overall, I wasn't the biggest fan of this book and found the performance to be a little too aggressive for my tastes.
But after discussing it in book club I was blown away. Everyone in the group had such different perspectives on the characters and their stories. Everyone had different interpretations and appreciated different aspects of different stories.
The mark of a great piece of literature is touching different lives in different ways. I've been in this book club for over two years and there's never been so much variety in our interpretations. I was certain impressed but I was truly moved at the end of our discussion. This book may not have been for me, but I would recommend it to anyone.

I loved it.
Revisado: 04-16-18
I really enjoyed this book.
its a truly lovely story told be a series of unrealisable narrators. It's a wonderful example of how a family stories, which are so engrained in our family's collective memory are usually remembered very different and how the stories that shape us evolved. I enjoyed the unusual structure of this book and the many truths it captures. Iencters are narated by different actors and I always enjoy that.
