Poignant Evolution

The first two books are great but this one is phenomenal. Khoury has outdone herself at evolving the world and what musiccraft can do. The emotional depth she goes to in this book are profound. The writing is a cut above too. Really, a stellar addition to this series. Brava

I liked the cast of antiheros and tbh the literary quality of the writing just kept getting better and better. Never a blacker, more questionable crew. But boy they’re great.

The author is a named man - Lord Grim Dark according to lore. He lives up to the name. The writing is good, very good. Say one thing about Joe Abercrombie, say that man can write a damn book.

More poignant than I reckoned for

The whole book was spent toggling back and forth between anecdotes and analysis in a good way. Thus, building a theory of the skills requisite for survival. Both pieces were well-executed and Rudincki was a good choice for narrator.

Not enough stars exist

Look, I AM Ari. Except I’m not. But I am an INTJ Ennegram 8 woman in this day and age. I am logical and incisive. I am pragmatic and focused and a little cynical. But Lily Chu has yet again knocked a stellar book out of the cosmos. She is a skilled writer who understands writing for the smart (probs most women’s) gaze. I’ve read all three of her books and this one had me 1) deep diving on K-pop for the first time ever and 2) I did indeed shed a tear or two. Thank you for writing men into existence that don’t exist in flesh and blood so I at least have a solid mental archetype to keep me going. I love the teeny tiny carry over between the books too. Highest marks all around.

Cerebrally low stakes fun

Chu does it again with a third romance novel for people who aren’t necessarily interested in a romance novel. Whatever romantic elements occur, the plot and characters are strong enough to stand on their own. So, the romance feels like a “little treat.” The physicality teases without becoming explicit, another plus for me. And while you can expect tension points, you can also expect satisfying resolution. Highest marks per usual.
