Historia
In Alexander the Great, Anthony Everitt judges Alexander’s life against the criteria of his own age and considers all his contradictions. We meet the Macedonian prince who was naturally inquisitive and fascinated by science and exploration, as well as the man who enjoyed the arts and used Homer’s great epic, the Iliad, as a bible. As his empire grew, Alexander exhibited respect for the traditions of his new subjects and careful judgment in administering rule over his vast territory. But his career also had a dark side.

A great biography of Alexander the Great, but in reality adds nothing new to his story. To be honest, I expected more.

Historia
When Calouste Gulbenkian died in 1955 at the age of 86, he was the richest man in the world, known as 'Mr Five Per Cent' for his personal share of Middle East oil. The son of a wealthy Armenian merchant in Istanbul, for half a century he brokered top-level oil deals, concealing his mysterious web of business interests and contacts within a labyrinth of Asian and European cartels, and convincing governments and oil barons alike of his impartiality as an 'honest broker'. Mr Five Per Cent reveals Gulbenkian's complex and many-sided existence.

Incredible life. Sad end.
Revisado: 01-12-25
Calouste Gulbenkian, Mr. 5%, was the architect of Middle East Oil as we know it. Instrumental in the founding of Royal Dutch Shell, this incredible Armenian rose to become the king maker of the development of oil in Mesopotamia.
His life was truly incredible, but in the end —dying as the world’s richest man—his paranoia and status as a man without a home, meant his legacy never was what he hoped it would be. His “5%” and the vast art collection he amassed were left to the Gulbenkian Foundation in Portugal., who ended up running it as an appendix of Salazar’s government…

Historia
Instead of being trained to fight, the few soldiers each year selected for Talpiot are taught how to think. In order to join this unit they have to commit to being in the army for 10 years, rather than the three years a normal soldier serves. Talpiots are taught advanced level physics, math, and computer science as they train with soldiers from every other branch of the IDF. The result: young men and women become research and development machines.

Good introduction to Israel ‘s Talpiot unit, one of the top units of the IDF. More of a general overview of the unit, but missing some more detail on the different work done over the last 30+ years. Maybe it’s all classified still?

From the author of Hitler: Ascent, 1889-1939 comes a riveting account of the dictator's final years, when he got the war he wanted but his leadership led to catastrophe for his nation, the world, and himself. Volker Ullrich offers fascinating new insight into Hitler's character and personality, vividly portraying the insecurity, obsession with minutiae, and narcissistic penchant for gambling that led Hitler to overrule his subordinates and then blame them for his failures.

Revisado: 10-15-24
A really great series. Thoroughly enjoyed the first volume. Now reading the second part and I must say it is quite disappointing that they chose this weak narrator.

Historia
Until his assassination by US drone strike in January 2020, commander Qassem Soleimani was one of the most powerful men in Iran and the military spearhead for Iranian foreign policy, enacting the wishes of the country's Supreme Leader in the region. A widely popular but also feared maverick operator, he helped to establish the Islamic Republic as a major force in the Middle East, with interventions in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. This was a long way from where he began as a youth, living on the margins in a country ruled by a monarch supported by the United States.

Historia
The Roman Empire and the Silk Routes investigates the trade routes between Rome and the powerful empires of inner Asia, including the Parthian regime which ruled ancient Persia (Iran). It explores Roman dealings with the Kushan Empire which seized power in Bactria (Afghanistan) and laid claim to the Indus Kingdoms. Further chapters examine the development of Palmyra as a leading caravan city on the edge of Roman Syria and consider trade ventures through the Tarim territories that led Roman merchants to Han China.

Excellent book. Horrible narration.
Revisado: 04-28-24
Excellent book on the trade and cultural relations between the eastern and western empires along the Silk Road. The narrator is probably one of the worst I have heard on Audible—and I’ve heard hundreds of titles, many on the same kind of subjects treated here. Incredible the author would approve of this…. Having said that, it is well worth the pain—you soon get numb to it—, as the subject matter is extremely interesting and well researched.

Historia
The Roman empire shaped the culture of the Western world against which all other great powers are compared. Stretching from the north of Britain to the Sahara, and from the Atlantic coast to the Euphrates, it imposed peace and prosperity on an unprecedented scale. However, the exception lay in the east, where the Parthian and then Persian empires ruled over great cities and the trade routes to mysterious lands beyond. This was the place Alexander the Great had swept through, creating a dream of glory and conquest which tantalized Greeks and Romans alike.

Excellent history of two of the great empires of history.
Revisado: 02-11-24
Through centuries of conflict and coexistence, the balance of power was maintained between the Roman and the Parthian/ Persian Empires in Asia Minor and the Middle East, as neither empire was ever able—nor it seems ever wanted — to completely take over and destroy the other. They both came to a tragic and sudden end in mere decades at the hands of the Arab Muslim armies of the 7th century. Adrian Goldsworthy takes us on an enlightening read through the history between these great states.

Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

Very Informative book on US Grant
Revisado: 07-21-23
A thorough and complete story of Ulysses S Grant. Although less appreciated today, US Grant played a fundamental role in the forging of the nation after the trauma of the Civil War. Chrome takes us through his life from his humble beginnings as a man of west through his travails in the years before his exploits as the commanding general of the Civil War to his presidency successes and scandals and ending with his post presidential years.
Excellent for those looking learn or refresh their knowledge of U.S. history in the years of the civil war and reconstruction.
