Historia
Sometimes you slip through the cracks: unforeseen circumstances like an abrupt illness, the death of a loved one, a breakup, or a job loss can derail a life. These periods of dislocation can be lonely and unexpected. For May, her husband fell ill, her son stopped attending school, and her own medical issues led her to leave a demanding job. Wintering explores how she not only endured this painful time, but embraced the singular opportunities it offered. Ultimately Wintering invites us to change how we relate to our own fallow times.

Beautiful writing and narration
Revisado: 01-11-25
I’ve now listened twice and also bought the book. The narration is like a soothing poem. At first, it took me a while to understand that each chapter contains multiple essays, but if you lean in, you will look at winter, nature, and hard times with a new perspective.

Historia
On May 27, 1784, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart met a flirtatious little starling in a Viennese shop who sang an improvised version of the theme from his Piano Concerto no. 17 in G major. Sensing a kindred spirit in the plucky young bird, Mozart bought him and took him home to be a family pet. For three years the starling lived with Mozart, influencing his work and serving as his companion, distraction, consolation, and muse.

Historia
Paula D'Arcy was only 27 when a drunk driver killed her husband and young daughter. But in the midst of her crushing despair, and to her complete amazement, she discovered a presence within her that responded to her fearful cries for help. Her anguished heart was met by a great tenderness and wisdom, which she grew to recognize as a transcendent love. Over time - knowing that pain was not the final say and did not have absolute power - she was able to find her way back to the light.

The book jumped around and had a lot of quotes. Not a lot of depth. The narrator made the book sound even more sad than it was.

Historia
Ross Gay’s The Book of Delights is a genre-defying collection of essays that record the small joys that occurred in one year, from birthday to birthday, and that we often overlook in our busy lives. His is a meditation on delight that takes a clear-eyed view of the complexities, even the terrors, in his life, including living in America as a Black man; the ecological and psychic violence of our consumer culture; the loss of those he loves.

Part Delight, Part TMI
Revisado: 05-14-24
Some parts were absolutely delightful. I love the idea of writing delights each day. Other parts were unpleasant to listen to.

Historia
Shortly after arriving on Cape Cod to spend a year by herself, Joan Anderson’s chance encounter with a wise, playful, and astonishing woman helped her usher in the transformations and self-discoveries that led to her ongoing renewal. First glimpsed as a slender figure on a fogged-in beach, Joan Erikson was not only a friend and confidante when one was most needed, but also a guide as Anderson stretched and grew into her unfinished self.

Enjoyable listen
Revisado: 07-25-23
I enjoyed A Year By The Sea. There is a movie of it as well that included parts from A Walk on The Beach, so I thought I’d give it a listen. I really enjoyed gaining wisdom from Joan Erickson. It was well performed too.

Historia
In 1942, the Gestapo sent out an urgent transmission: "She is the most dangerous of all Allied spies. We must find and destroy her." The target in their sights was Virginia Hall, a Baltimore socialite who talked her way into Special Operations Executive, the spy organization dubbed Winston Churchill's "Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare." She became the first Allied woman deployed behind enemy lines and - despite her prosthetic leg - helped to light the flame of the French Resistance, revolutionizing secret warfare as we know it.

Fascinating story, lots of details
Revisado: 08-05-19
Captivating and well-researched, A Woman of No Importance is a great listen. I did, however confuse the many, many names read throughout the course of the book and Virginia’s life. It was difficult to distinguish which names would arise again, particularly from listening and not reading. I deducted one star due to the feel of mostly facts without the feel of a story. I would still recommend the book to anyone.

This is one to listen to!
Revisado: 03-04-19
This is the second in the Hope Springs series and a perfect way to continue the story. It was a perfect listen, with the reader doing Irish accents for most characters. Good story, fun listen!
