Connie Willis’ stunning narrative encourages many avenues of thinking. Ostensibly a time travel book, we understand that despite our sense of linear movement, as far as human behavior is concerned, we have been living a centuries-long “today.” What I most appreciated in her very real characters was their resolve, whether their goals were laudable or laughable, whether their pains were real or imagined. The storyline is sometimes exasperating, sometimes brutal, but always intriguing, and it contains a valuable lesson: whatever the situation, take responsibility for yourself and never give up.

A Good Read/Listen for Teens?

I think that the Midnight Library could have been a really good read. It certainly starts with a provocative premise and real promise: an evaluation of the self by the self from the inside and the outside. Unfortunately the moments of fresh insight were outweighed by repetition and predictable outcomes. At times I kept waiting for the storyline to stop spinning in place and get somewhere. I don’t at all regret listening to it; the story arc is sound and some turns of phrase were memorable, but I feel that it misses as a book for adults.
