Historia
Queenie Jenkins is a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in London, straddling two cultures and slotting neatly into neither. She works at a national newspaper, where she’s constantly forced to compare herself to her white middle-class peers. After a messy breakup from her White long-term boyfriend, Queenie seeks comfort in all the wrong places...including several hazardous men who do a good job of occupying brain space and a bad job of affirming self-worth.

Entertaining
Revisado: 05-26-22
An engaging story. Reminiscent of The Coldest Winter in the realness of the characters. I found myself rooting for Queenie. There were parts of the story I wish were explored deeper, but as written the book lends itself well to a book club debate where participants can fill in their own blackys and debate their perspectives.

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Poetic
Revisado: 02-13-20
This book was written like a descriptively beautiful and vivid poem. The characters were rich and the story line was timeless. I would highly recommend this book. The only issue I had was with the volume of the two narrators. One was very quiet and the other loud which forced me to have to continually moderate the speakers.

I found an envelope in the mail. No return address. My name on the front, my address. Inside was a check, made out to me, in the amount of 10 thousand dollars. Enough to pay the bills and leave me some left over to live on until I found a job. Enough to let me focus on classes. There was no name on the check, just "VRI Inc.", and a post office box address for somewhere in the city. No hint of identity or reason for the check or anything. No mention of repayment, interest, nothing...except a single word, on the notes line: "You." Just those three letters.

super corny and awkward
Revisado: 09-13-19
I hoped to like this book but I just couldn't. What should have been sexy was weird, awkward and gross. I found myself laughing at the choice of "dirty" words and the incredibly contrived speech. My ears felt molested when I wanted to be seduced.

great book and reading.
Sometimes a little hard to follow as an audiobook because of all the characters, but the reading by DS is worth the occasional moments of confusion.
