A fine combination
Revisado: 11-10-04
I can't say anything that hasn't been mentioned before. The book, and Cleese's performance, are wonderful. They shouldn't be missed.

Historia
On the outer banks of the Carolinas in 1941, fishermen and a few lonely sailors constitute the human population. Dominating the rough yet beautiful landscape is the majestic Killakeet Lighthouse, run for generations by the Thurlow family. But Josh Thurlow, the lighthouse keeper's son, has forsworn his heritage to become the commander of a small Coast Guard patrol boat. Tortured by twenty years of guilt for losing his brother at sea, Josh still searches for him.

A fine story
Revisado: 11-10-04
I'd agree with the first reviewer - Hickam tells a good story. He isn't as technically proficient as some authors, but he really knows how to develop characters, and make them interesting. The book is more of a love story than I anticipated, but don't let that turn you away - while the romance seems forced, it doesn't detract from the main plot at all.

Historia
President Bill Clinton's My Life is the strikingly candid portrait of a global leader who decided early in life to devote his intellectual and political gifts, and his extraordinary capacity for hard work, to serving the public. It is the fullest, most concretely detailed, most nuanced account of a presidency ever written, and a testament to the positive impact on America and on the world of his work and his ideals.

Abandoned it after about an hour
Revisado: 11-10-04
Bill Clinton is a much better speaker than writer, unfortunately. The book really has no artistic merit at all, that I could find. It's basically of the form "I did this then I did this then I did this then I did this then I did this...". The style was so irritating that I couldn't bear to continue listening after just an hour. Out of the literally thousands of print books that I've read, and the dozens of audio books, this is one of only 2 or 3 where I couldn't make myself go any farther.

Historia
For John Chatterton and Richie Kohler, deep wreck diving was more than a sport. Testing themselves against treacherous currents, braving depths that induced hallucinatory effects, they pushed themselves to their limits and beyond, brushing against death more than once in the rusting hulks of sunken ships.

Worth a listen
Revisado: 11-10-04
The book starts out with some overly melodramatic writing - so much that I was tempted to abandon it. But I stuck with it, and either the writing got better, or I ceased to notice.
Once the action starts, the book is wonderful. It really makes you feel like you're 200 feet down with the divers, as the explore the wreck. Now I'm wishing that I purchased the unabridged version.

Historia
At Will Durant's death at 96, in 1981, his personal papers were dispersed among relatives, collectors, and archive houses. Twenty years later, scholar John Little discovered the previously unknown manuscript of Heroes of History in Durant's granddaughter's garage. Written shortly before he died, these 21 essays serve as an abbreviated version of Durant's best-selling, 11-volume series, The Story of Civilization.

Nice overview
Revisado: 11-10-04
A pretty good overview of world history - at least as much as can be covered in a few hours. The author even mentions names he's skipping over at various points, which provides a nice resource to go off and do additional resource.
The narration is fine - I love Grover Garner's voice, when it comes to these sorts of narratives.

Historia
Every time Bill Bryson walks out the door, memorable travel literature threatens to break out. His previous excursion on the Appalachian Trail resulted in the best seller A Walk in the Woods. Now, we follow him "Down Under" to Australia with this delectably funny, fact-filled, and adventurous performance that combines humor, wonder, and unflagging curiosity. More from Bill Bryson.

I have to wonder....
Revisado: 02-26-04
.... how many people have decided to take a trip to Australia, based on this book alone? It certainly made me want to go!
Bryson is doing what he does best - dry, usually understated humor, delivered in a style that can't be imitated.
