Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 11-07-24
I have listened to one of Louise Penny‘s books and I love three Pines and everything it represents unfortunately there was not much three pines in this one. The story was not bad, although it was hard to follow, and there were so many difficulties in the names for me at least, but the narrator made it really difficult. I tried my best to get involved with the narrator, but he does not have the capability of giving life to each individual. They all sounded the same as much as I love Penny’s books this was not my favorite. I finished it, but Shirley ask Louise Penny to consider bringing a Bathurst back and bringing three pines back. No this was not my favorite and I worked hard to get through it. I don’t think I can recommend it to other people.

This is a very remarkable book
Revisado: 08-29-24
I have now listened to all three of these wonderful books written by TanTwan Eng. this one probably being the most sensitive. This author has a powerful command of the English language, and the prose is almost poetic.

Historia
The year is 1921. Lesley Hamlyn and her husband, Robert, a lawyer and war veteran, are living at Cassowary House on the Straits Settlement of Penang. When “Willie” Somerset Maugham, a famed writer and old friend of Robert’s, arrives for an extended visit with his secretary Gerald, the pair threatens a rift that could alter more lives than one. Maugham, one of the great novelists of his day, is beleaguered: Having long hidden his homosexuality, his unhappy and expensive marriage of convenience becomes unbearable after he loses his savings—and the freedom to travel with Gerald.

Historia
On the eve of the bloody Battle of the Somme, a group of English officers having a last drink before returning to the front make a promise to each other: if they survive the battle ahead - and make it through the war - they will meet in Paris a year after the fighting ends. They will celebrate their good fortune by racing motorcars they beg, borrow, or own from Paris to Nice. In November 1919 the officers all meet as planned, and though their motorcars are not designed for racing, they set out for Nice. But a serious mishap mars the reunion.

Revisado: 02-15-24
I have read many of Inspector Rutledge stories. This one is an absolute winner, and I enjoyed every moment. I particularly enjoy Simon Preble, who could not do a better job. I think author, and I think Mr. Preble.

Historia
Sonny Lamb is an affable, if floundering, rancher with the unfortunate habit of becoming a punchline in his Texas hometown. Most recently, to everyone’s headshaking amusement, he bought his own bull at an auction. But when a fire breaks out at a neighbor’s farm, Sonny makes headlines in another way: not waiting for help, he bolts to the farm where his heroic actions make the evening news.

Historia
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

One of the best
Revisado: 11-07-23
It is true I could not put this book down. The listen that is. The story was a little far out at times but it did not seem to make one bit of difference. There was high drama at all levels. And I can only say the greatest things about this narrator. She is fantastic, and I will look for her again.

Historia
The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works. Told in language of great simplicity and power, it is the story of an old Cuban fisherman, down on his luck, and his supreme ordeal, a relentless, agonizing battle with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. Here Hemingway recasts, in strikingly contemporary style, the classic theme of courage in the face of defeat, of personal triumph won from loss.

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Measurably surprised by Spare. Harry read this very well and could be an audible narrator. I did NOT think him unkind to family. The Royals are special, and the insight only demands patience and understanding. Hated to see it end
