Historia
Born in 1949 to a prosperous family in Tehran, Abbas Milani grew up in an Iran of culture and tradition. He was sent to the United States for his studies, and it was there that he made his transition to adulthood, becoming active intellectually, sexually, and politically. Flush with 1960s idealism, he returned home in 1975, only to find his country utterly changed.

Wonderful and heartbreaking
Revisado: 04-25-21
Abbas Milani is the grandfather of Iranian studies in America and the heart and soul of his generation of the Iranian diaspora. His life and struggle is not just a personal history, but a history of the nation's piecemeal lurch into Western style modernity and the ravages of the Islamic Revolution and the war with Iraq. It's a bittersweet journey that gives Americans such as myself a first person peak into a land we most likely will never see because of the hostility and suspicion of the Islamist regime, lack of US-Iran relations and embassies, and for America, a self imposed ignorance of Iranian culture and language. In America, where the dedicated study of Iran has all but disappeared, this book is an argument for more study and renewed diplomacy.

Historia
It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages. England is facing attacks from the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east. Those in power bend justice according to their will, regardless of ordinary people and often in conflict with the king. Without a clear rule of law, chaos reigns. In these turbulent times, three characters find their lives intertwined.

A letter to the COVID19 world
Revisado: 05-19-20
I listened to this two months into shelter-in-place and life in near isolation. When it was over, I hugged my children, drew my husband close, and realized things are not so bad. It could be a lot worse. But then again, as Wright reminds us, the second wave is coming.

Historia
The deadly invasion of Charlottesville, Virginia, by white nationalist militias in August 2017 is a microcosm of the challenges facing American democracy today. In his first-person account, Michael Signer, then Charlottesville's mayor, both tells the story of what really happened and draws out its larger significance. Signer's gripping, strikingly candid "you are there" narrative sets the events on the ground - the lead-up to August's "Unite the Right" rally, the rally itself, the aftermath - in the larger context of a country struggling to find its way in a disruptive new era.

Couldn't put it down
Revisado: 03-16-20
I don't usually go for non fiction and memoir type books but I decided to take a chance on this one. It reads like a Greek tragedy for the Trump era and I couldn't stop listening.
At the same time heart wrenching and reassuring, the book is an intimate look at what lies beneath the viral video of a car ramming into a crowd of people, what we know as #Charlottesville. It tells the story of a well intentioned but bumbling mayor trying to work within a system that seems custom built to protect the "free speech" and gun rights of the hundreds of the alt right, neo-nazi and white nationalists that invaded a college town with guns, shields, and flag pole spears. Most important, it finally answers the question of why state and local police just stood by--did absolutely nothing-- as people rioted in the streets and injured women and men begged them for help. A warning: the answer is not pretty.
Somehow the author manages to put his personal story-- one of struggle and suffering, of painful political missteps, and desperate but ultimately failed attempts to stop the rally from happening-- in the context of the greater struggle of American democracy in this unprecedented time.

Disturbing, sexy, and very well narrated
Revisado: 01-18-20
Written from the perspective of Joe, we are both sympathetic and disturbed by a story of murder and obsession. The story unfolds in a straight line wholly in Joes mind, punctuated by human interactions and memories of abuse and abandonment.
