Unbearable. I'm so sad.
Revisado: 02-12-18
I love the Pendergast books - at least the early ones. The writing has become so formulaic you could predict what was going to happen in ALL of the very unnecessary storylines. Mild spoilers ahead.
Pendergast, who started as the enigmatic and brilliant agent, is now pendantic and *gasp* can be beaten. Where is the fun in that? These books were never anywhere close to reality, so why try to make him more human now? And don't even get me started on D'Agosto. How can he still be so bumbling and have such a high ranking in the force? And married? None of his actions support his current character.
Then there is the whole Constance part. And the former priest with the Bonfire of the Vanities? Laura's single part is arresting him? What was the point? Of ANY of it?
Maybe it's just me, but I loved when it was just Pendergast, moving through the scenes like a wraith, solving the crimes as only he could, leaving everyone else in the dust but bringing the reader along for the ride. This book felt like it was the story of how D'Agosta and Harriman continually got it all wrong, but we as readers had no idea what was really going on, and Pendergast was pretty much absent. We didn't see him save the day until the very end.
Also, I think Preston & Child have started using their thesaurus button a little too often while writing - unnecessarily flowery & descriptive. I'm returning this one - very disappointed.

Again???
Revisado: 10-26-17
I LOVED the DaVinci Code - it was groundbreaking, thrilling, and educational. This is just a rehash of the same same, but dull and slow-paced. Robert Langdon now has the most ridiculous memory - his eidetic memory now is boundless - he knows everything about everything, as long as he can sit and think about it long enough. His memory is constantly being pulled in to save the plot line. And in a super irritating way - with his recognition of something very important and then it taking FOREVER to actually get to what it is and why it is important to the plot. Rinse and repeat. Over and over. Brown constantly stops the action so Langdon can come to some pivotal realization. Over and over. Sorry, but it doesn't work anymore.
If you must listen (and I know there are people like me, who will ignore the meh reviews and download it anyway), do yourself a HUGE favor and at least listen to it at 1.25 speed. There was no audible distortion in the playback, and at least it didn't drag on for quite so long. Should have tried it at 1.5 speed.

The worst one yet, sadly.
Revisado: 05-24-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I love the Preston & Child books and am willing to suspend a LOT of disbelief, but this book goes beyond the ridiculous. Not only is it a disjointed and stilted story, but around every corner is an increasingly silly and unbelievable disaster. Of course, they mostly all survive. Those that don't, well, it's increasingly gruesome. I can't even remotely recommend this book. The performance was ok, but the writing was so absolutely terrible it didn't really matter.
Would you listen to another book narrated by David W. Collins?
Yes. I can't listen to anything narrated by Scott Brick. Riptide was one of my favorite books by Preston & Child before I listened to it.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Beyond the Ice Limit?
I don't even know where to start. It's like they took every horror alien movie ever made and put them at the bottom of the sea.
Any additional comments?
Please don't. Just don't.

Historia
Leading health blogger Jimmy Moore and researcher and internist Dr. Eric C. Westman join forces again to explain the powerful therapeutic effects of a ketogenic diet—one that combines a customized carbohydrate restriction, moderation of protein intake, and real food-based fats—which is emerging in the scientific literature as a means for improving a wide range of diseases, from Type 2 diabetes to Alzheimer's and more. Simply eating a low-carb diet alone isn't enough, and Moore and Westman tell you why. Have you looked at a low-carb diet simply as a means to lose weight? What if you learned that combining a low-carb nutritional approach with a high fat intake produces a powerful therapeutic effect on a wide variety of health conditions that most people think requires medication to control? That’s what Keto Clarity is all about. Jimmy Moore, a leading low-carb diet blogger and podcaster, has reunited with his Cholesterol Clarity co-author Dr. Eric C. Westman, a practicing internist and low-carb diet researcher, to bring you the crystal-clear information you need to understand what a ketogenic diet is and why it may be the missing element in your pursuit of optimal health. This book includes exclusive interviews from twenty of the world's foremost authorities from various fields bringing their depth of expertise and experience using this nutritional approach. Moore and Westman explain why ketosis is normal and how this nutritional approach is being used therapeutically by many medical professionals. You will find a step-by-step guide to help you produce more ketones and track your progress, real life success stories, and more. The solid evidence for nutritional ketosis in dealing with many of the chronic health problems of our day is presented, including but not limited to: epilepsy, Type 2 diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, polycystic ovarian syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome.

I don't think the bells are too annoying - it was more the "moment of clarity quote" EVERY SINGLE TIME, but otherwise, well put together and very compelling.
There are a handful of places where it seemed editing went awry - just wait and the narration will start again. I'm a little surprised it hasn't been fixed.
Much better at a little faster speed. All in all, despite critiques above, if you are at all interested in a ketogenic gdiet, I HIGHLY recommend it.

Historia
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Meh
Revisado: 04-27-15
Couldn't really like any of the characters. The storyline was intriguing, and very well read, but I got so tired of the lead character. It probably is a much better read than listen, even though the narration was outstanding. The story didn't hold up to the length of the audiobook. Still a good book, but try reading it instead of listening. It was a slog to finish, but I wanted to know what happened...

A long-buried family secret resurfaces when one of Aloysius Pendergast's most implacable enemies shows up on his doorstep as a murdered corpse. The mystery has all the hallmarks of the perfect murder, save for an enigmatic clue: a piece of turquoise lodged in the stomach of the deceased. The gem leads Pendergast to an abandoned mine on the shore of California's desolate Salton Sea, which in turn propels him on a journey of discovery deep into his family's sinister past.

LOVED this series in the beginning. Now it is just silly. Was sort of painful to listen to, and I am willing to suspend a lot belief, but this stretched even my limits of credibility. Well read, as usual - it's the story that falls apart.

SOOO disappointing
Revisado: 09-17-13
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I thought this book was exactly the kind of book I would enjoy, but it was so badly written that I could barely get through it. I accidentally skipped a section and didn't even bother to go back - I was just happy that I was that much closer to the end. The storyline was ridiculous. It's not even about suspending belief at what a ridiculous idea this is - the storyline is just plain annoying and plays out in slow motion. I mean SLOW. You can see things coming a mile away but it takes FOREVER to get there.
Did the narrators do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
It was a cast reading, and for the most part, the best part of the book by far. The female lead had a weird, tired and flat aspect to her voice, but it sort of fit the character.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Just relief when it was over. The main characters were ridiculous - especially the Frozen Man himself.
Any additional comments?
What had the potential of being an excellent read was instead a huge disappointment. I have never not finished a book, but this one came VERY close. Save your credit.

Probably great on paper, but audio...
Revisado: 09-02-10
I love this kind of fiction - it is right up my alley. So I was doubly disappointed by this book by the time I got to the end. Which, after dragging on for HOURS, was ridiculously abrupt. I think if I had read it on paper, I could have skimmed a lot of it and might have enjoyed it more. Interesting concept, but OMG way too long on audio. And I like a long audio book. I was ready to pull my hair out if there was one more "Who Am I" or vampire-like person's name read. DO NOT BUY THIS ON AUDIO - go support your public library and give it a try in paper.
