The entire book has you desperately wanting the author to get to the point, which finally comes in the last few sentences. And that is... There is no formula to finding happiness. Sorry for wasting your time.

Well he doesn't actually apologize.

A Must Listen

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 09-01-04

This Audio Book is a MUST LISTEN for all those who are exposed to the media, and in particular the right wing media, with regard to political news and discourse.

You will be amazed at the insidious, underhanded, despicable, sometimes subtle, sometimes blatant, tactics and methods that the right wing media uses to mislead their listeners and readers into believing in a reality that is total bunk.

A false reality designed to cloud your mind and pull the wool over your eyes while the right implements their nefarious goals of (in my opinion - controlling the masses under a hard core theocratic rule, while those in power milk the ignorant believers, and the oppressed, so that they can get richer and more powerful while the masses get poorer and more subjugated.)

And to top off the relating of this highly interesting, and extremely important topic, it is told by Al Franken. So, not only are you being informed and educated, you are also being entertained by Mr. Franken's wit.

I have very much enjoyed listnening to this book and highly recommend it to those on the left and the right, alike.

Easy to Understand and Comprehensive

4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 09-19-03

I found this to be a very comprehensive history of cosmology that is well written and well read. It is written for the lay person and is therefore easy to understand. It was an enjoyable listening experience, and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in the subject of cosmology.

Laugh out loud funny

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-14-03

This book is laugh-out-loud funny, even on Audio. Of course, for some reason, I laughed even more when I read the book. Perhaps it was just funnier the first time around. There are some parts of the book that tend to be a little dull, however there are many parts which are just hilarious (The whale contemplating his brief existance... Outrageous! Don't know what I'm talking about, well I'm afraid you'll just have to get this one then). Anyhow, I give it four stars, because it's not really a master piece in the most strict sense of the term, but it is a very good book none-the-less.

So Depressing

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-08-03

This is a great book, IF you want to depress yourself with conjecture, based on our current scientific understanding of the universe, of how utterly impossible and/or improbable all of your favorite fantasy technologies in science fiction really are. Did you ever want to renew your belief that humanity really IS trapped here on this planet without hope of moving outward into the universe, let alone having visitors from other worlds? Then THIS book is for you!

In this book, the author quite succinctly and eloquently explains in layman?s terms how pretty much every fascinating thing we've seen in science fiction films is, while often times "theoretically" possible, is "realistically" IMpossible for even the most advanced civilizations. It's unfortunate that the author doesn't provide more hope that what humanity currently knows about the workings of the universe isn't the be-all-end-all ultimate understanding of everything. You get the distinct impression that the author believes we've pretty much figured the universe and reality out, and therefore nothing fascinating like we see in science fiction entertainment will ever come to be.

Ultimately, by the end of listening to this book, I was very depressed and discouraged that the author effectively ruined my enjoyment of all my favorite science fiction movies and television. Still, I tried to remind myself that this guy may someday be viewed the same way as those who believed the world was flat or the sun revolved around the earth. We may indeed someday discover the universe and reality is more complex than we realize, and what we can't perceive as possible now, may someday be as easy as science fiction films make it look.
